Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Mayor Breed Announces $3.9 Million in Funding for Buchanan Street Mall Mayor London Breed last week announced the allocation of $3.9 million in federal funding to renovate Buchanan Street Mall, which stretches five consecutive blocks between Eddy and Grove streets in San Francisco’s Western Addition. The funding comes from the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program, administered through the National Park Service. With the allocation of these funds, the improvement project is now fully funded. Construction will begin on the first three blocks in spring of 2023, with construction on the remaining two blocks beginning in summer of 2024. The vision for the Buchanan Street Mall Project, developed in an ongoing partnership with the community since 2014, is to create a vibrant, safe, and equitable gathering space that encourages interaction between people of all ages. The project is a partnership between us, Citizen Film, Green Streets, Trust for Public Land, the Exploratorium's Studio for Public Spaces, and the San Francisco Parks Alliance. A special thanks as well to State Senator Scott Wiener for helping to secure funding for this project. For more information, click the link below. Sankofa Market AAPI Month in our Parks: Japantown Peace Plaza May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month, in which we celebrate the generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to our communities. We are taking a look at our parks and their features, which are named after prominent AAPI people or hold significance in the AAPI community. San Francisco's Japantown is one of the last three remaining Japantowns in the United States and has been around for more than 110 years and 5 generations. Japanese émigrés occupied the area after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Since then, it has become home to culturally significant community organizations, institutions, artists, businesses, and buildings. Its Peace Plaza open space has been the cultural heart of the community and is a key host for cultural festivals and community celebrations in Northern California. In the 1960s, construction began on the Japanese Cultural and Trade Center, which included a hotel and retail spaces in various buildings. The epicenter of the project was a town square known as the Peace Plaza. As the design of the plaza by Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi developed, a Modernist concrete pagoda emerged as an integral part the design. The proposed concrete construction’s overall design was inspired by a more ancient pagoda. When completed in 1968, the 100-foot-tall Peace Pagoda featured a nine-ringed gilded bronze spire, known as a kurin, which is intended to demonstrate the highest virtue. It was topped by a flame (hoshu) and at the highest point, a decorative ball. The five copper clad round roofs below serve as a base to the spire. Another prominent feature of the Peace Plaza is a triangular monument titled "From Injustice to Redress" that tells the story of the Japanese community in the remaining Japantowns in California. Its bas-relief faces depict the Issei pioneers, the WWII internment experience, and current community life. The piece includes a poem by the late Janice Mirikitani, a Japanese-American poet and activist and former San Francisco Arts Commissioner. Today, the plaza continues to serve as an important gathering space for the community, and hosts major neighborhood and cultural events including the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, Nihonmachi Street Fair and more.
