ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Prayers for Uvalde

Yet another senseless tragedy has occurred in our country. As we collectively grieve with the victims’ families for their incomprehensible losses, we wanted to convey our thoughts to those affected. We know this acknowledgment to you of our feelings today is not enough nor does it make a difference, but the horrific attack on school children and their teachers in Texas could and can happen anywhere. We are devastated, as we know you are.
Free Admission for Military on Memorial Day Weekend

We are proud to offer free admission for retired and active military personnel on Memorial Day Weekend, May 28th - May 30th. Please show your military ID upon your arrival and our Guest Services Representatives will let you in. Thank you for your service and we hope you enjoy the Zoo!
New at the Zoo: Prairie Dog Pups

Spring is in the air and we are thrilled to announce the arrival of prairie dog pups here at SF Zoo & Gardens! Black-tailed prairie dogs are known as a keystone species and play an important role in prairie ecology. More than 165 species of animals and insects depend on them for survival. They are a critical food source for many mammal and bird species, and the constant burrowing activity of prairie dogs works to loosen the soil, unearthing insects that birds eat. Make sure to stop by the Exploration Zone this Memorial Day Weekend to see the adorable pups.
Snow Leopard Habitat Update
One of the many benefits of our newly opened Expedition Snow Leopard habitat is the design feature that allows our snow leopards “Casper”, “Jinx”, and “Jimmy G.”, to switch exhibits. We built a transfer chute between the new and old exhibit areas that makes swapping habitats possible. We are excited to let you know that we have started the process of switching our snow leopards from one part of the habitat to the other.

Our wellness and carnivore staff have worked together to create a behavior plan with steps that were safe for the cats and allowed them to progress at a pace with which they were comfortable. The cats had some choice and control over the time they spent exploring new spaces throughout the training process. Letting the cats’ behavior guide our training steps kept the process positive for everyone. Because of the training, teamwork, and patience of the staff and animals, the cats were able to switch exhibits successfully. Swapping habitats provides the animals with mental and physical stimulation which is very enriching for the cats. Each habitat has different features, scents and viewing options of which the cats take full advantage.

Congratulations to our team for successfully teaching the snow leopards how to shift back and forth using positive teaching methods that are of the highest standard. Come by and see our snow leopards this Memorial Day Weekend!
