ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Visit SF Zoo During Thanksgiving Week
With Thanksgiving approaching next week, we want to thank you all for your support. We at the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens are thankful that we continue to be able to provide the opportunity to connect with and appreciate the natural wonders of our world. As a nonprofit, we rely upon the generosity of supporters like you to help us maintain our status as one of San Francisco’s prized community institutions. As a friendly reminder, we are open 365 days a year including Thanksgiving and Christmas! Come visit us to get some fresh air, spend time with your loved ones and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Zoo before indulging in all of the delicious Thanksgiving food.
We're Celebrating Orangutan Caring Week
As we wrap up Orangutan Caring Week, we would like to provide you some resources with ways you can help save these critically endangered gardeners of the forest. Make sure you use products made with sustainable palm oil. Our friends at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo have a variety of shopping guides (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=35129308c5&e=7683a9aed3) and an app so that you can buy products produced by companies that are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). We also encourage you to support organizations like Orangutan Foundation (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=088701c7e6&e=7683a9aed3) and BOS Foundation (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=e87a316a86&e=7683a9aed3) .
And come visit our pair, Judy and Berani! They serve as amazing ambassadors of the Bornean orangutan species, and have become fan favorites with their individual personalities shining through.
See Boone Enjoy a Giant Pumpkin
We were contacted recently by the purveyors of the Kensington Farmer’s Market in the East Bay, who were gifted with a giant pumpkin for their Guess-the-Weight-of the-Giant-Pumpkin contest held at their outdoor market over Halloween. With the completion of their event, they found themselves with a 1,328-lb. pumpkin, and while popular, knew they couldn’t keep it forever. They reached out to us, as a way to “demonstrate the power of goodwill” to their kids and the community, seeking a more practical use for the overgrown gourd. Hence, on behalf of the children of Kensington, and to model positive recycling values and help establish a bond between their community and the Zoo, we graciously accepted the pumpkin, which needed a forklift to move! And who was the lucky recipient of Kensington’s famous pumpkin? Our black rhino, Boone!
Greater one-horned rhino gets more space!
Have you had a chance to see Gauhati explore part of his new habitat? A few months ago, we expanded his habitat and gave him extra rooms with wood chips which are essential for foot health in greater one-horned rhinos. Greater one-horned rhinos are the largest land mammal after elephants, along with the African white rhino, and foot care is extremely important, so we are happy to see that he is loving this extension.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
This past weekend, during the Komodo Karnival, our new male Komodo dragon made his debut! The three-year-old has been exploring his new habitat & settling in well. His name will be announced by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia on Friday, November 18, so stay tuned for that announcement. Come out and see him during our “Tales of the Komodo Dragon” event sponsored by First 5 California.
