With the celebration of National Animal Rescue Appreciation Week earlier this month, we are more focused than ever on our mission to safeguard a future for rescued animals and endangered species. Did you know that nearly a third of our animals are rescued animals? This Giving Tuesday, please help support the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens’ commitment to this important work.
Many of our most iconic residents are the result of SF Zoo stepping in and saving animals from euthanasia. Our grizzly bear sisters, “Kiona” and “Kachina”, were orphaned in their home state of Montana, and because they became used to human-induced food rewards while being cared for as cubs by local wildlife officials, were unable to successfully return to the wild. The decision was made by Montana wildlife officials to euthanize them, until we stepped in and offered to create a special home for them. Today, these animals serve as an important conservation messaging reminder about the constant tension between humans and animals as humans increase their footprint.
Similarly, our adorable black bears, “Juneau” and “Valdez”, were rescued as orphaned cubs from their native Alaskan home, where both bears were found independently wandering in the wild after their mothers were assumed to have been shot by hunters. Both cubs were severely malnourished and at risk for euthanasia until SF Zoo offered to provide them with lifelong safe homes.
Your Zoo is also home to vulnerable and endangered species like our two newest residents, a male Komodo dragon and a male pygmy hippo. The Komodo dragon, native only to a few small islands in Indonesia, is the world’s largest lizard, but is at risk due to the deforestation of the volcanic islands that it calls home. Pygmy hippos are shy, nocturnal animals that are substantially smaller than their Nile hippo counterparts, reaching a size of 400-500 pounds compared to 4,000 pounds! Pygmy hippos are endangered due to threats of habitat destruction, bushmeat trade, and civil unrest.
Closer to home, come learn about local endangered and rescued animals, such as the San Francisco fork-tailed damselfly, at our very own California Conservation Corridor. This exhibit tells the story of California's native species and highlights the work of the Zoo's Conservation department. We hope to raise awareness of why it's important for everyone to do their part to protect the natural world around us, especially right here in our own backyard.
Together, we must work to make meaningful long-term conservation a reality. As a nonprofit, we need your help to be successful. For those of you who are able, please consider making a tax-deductible gift (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=8cd98ca55c&e=7683a9aed3) this Giving Tuesday. 100% of your donation will go towards supporting our conservation, rescue, and endangered animal programs.
>From your incredible gifts of time and/or money, we thank our community for creating a safer world for all animals!
