Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg to Serve on NRPA Board of Directors The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has named San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg to its Board of Directors, SF Rec and Park officials announced this week. The NRPA is the leading non-profit organization in the recreation and parks industry, with the Board of Directors serving as the organization’s governing board, responsible for creating and supervising policies. Ginsburg is one of 23 NRPA board directors. The NRPA works with other non-profits, government agencies, business leaders, and academic institutions to champion the parks and recreation field through advocacy, grants, programs, research, and more. Ginsburg has served as our general manager since 2009, overseeing 4,000 acres of open space and 225 parks throughout the city. During his tenure, Ginsburg has maintained a focus on increasing equity and access to the city’s parks. In 2018, San Francisco became the first city in the U.S. where every resident lives within a 10-minute walk of a park. In 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Ginsburg to the California Department of Parks and Recreation Commission, where Ginsburg currently serves as vice chairperson. In August of this year, Ginsburg was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. In addition, Ginsburg recently served as a board member on the City Parks Alliance, a national urban park advocacy organization. Prior to his current role as NRPA board director, Ginsburg served on NRPA’s Parks Recovery Task Force. For more information, click the link below. Phil Ginsburg to serve on NRPA Board of Directors   Hardly Strictly Brings Bluegrass and More to Golden Gate Park Thank you to everyone who came out for the return of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park last weekend! We had a blast jamming out with everyone and look forward to next year. Check out some of our favorite photos from the weekend courtesy of photographer Phil Halperin.    Community Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at Heron's Head Park This past weekend, we commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration at the EcoCenter in Heron's Head Park! More than 100 attendees participated in arts and crafts, a tamale making demo, nature walks and play, and more. A special thanks to Edgewood Center for Children and Families, Latino Outdoors, and The Port of San Francisco for making this event possible!   Corona Heights Trails Reopen to the Public Earlier this week, the Corona Heights trails reopened to the public, corresponding with the end of pupping season. These trails are proactively closed to help reduce the potential for coyote conflict with the public. Learn more about coexistence, the dangers of feeding wildlife and the tragic consequences via the San Francisco Chronicle at the link below. Coyotes in San Francisco   Transit Impact at JFK Promenade and Kezar Drive We've begun work to spruce the entrance at the JFK Promenade and Kezar Drive. We anticipate work will take approximately two weeks to complete. Note that biking will be impacted by the work in this area. Please follow signage and the direction of work crews when biking through. In addition, the JFK Shuttle will be re-routed and will not stop at McLaren Lodge or Haight Street for the duration of the project, turning around at the Daliah Dell on Pompeii Circle instead. Stay up to date at sfrecpark.org.    Traffic Improvement Project on Middle Drive Starting on October 6 We’re further improving road safety in Golden Gate Park! Starting tomorrow, October 6 crews will be out installing a separated lane to protect people traveling by bike and foot along Middle Drive while allowing drivers to safely access the Polo Fields parking lot. Work is expected to wrap up by the end of the month. This improvement is part of a range of commitments made by Rec and Park and SFMTA through the Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program to make the park safer and more welcoming. Other improvements include better signage, fun activations, and improved access to the JFK Promenade. To safely move cars through this stretch of road while maintaining a continuous, separated route for people on bikes and foot, we’re adding in buffers to create designated spaces for different users. Additionally, new pavement markings and signs will direct everyone where to go. Crews will work in the mostly in the mornings. Between the Polo Fields lot and MLK, Middle Drive will be closed to vehicles until the work wraps up—if you’re driving, please use Metson Road to access the lot! People on foot or on bike will still be able to pass through.    People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park Ruth has worked as a nurse for over 30 years. Even though she finds her career rewarding, sometimes she likes to slip away for a quick walk along the JFK Promenade to clear her mind. “I come here on my breaks to take a little walk, or I’ll just sit and watch the birds or the flowers. The park is so beautiful,” she said. “There’s no cars now, so it’s good. It’s safer to walk or bike now. I don’t know how to bike but I’ve been wanting a scooter. One of these days,” she laughs. Whether on wheels or on foot, one thing is certain: being outdoors is a mood-changer. “We have such stressful jobs. It’s good to even just take a 15-minute or 20-minute walk. You go back to work and it’s like you’re refreshed and have more strength for the rest of the day,” Ruth said. People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park. Learn more about the promenade, including upcoming activations and events, at the link below. JFK Promenade   Call for Artists for India Basin Waterfront Park Project The San Francisco Arts Commission is looking for artists and artist teams to submit public art proposals for the India Basin Waterfront Park Project at India Basin Shoreline Park. Proposals for this public art opportunity may range from a single, large sculpture to a series of smaller, human-scale sculptures located along the walking paths through the current India Basin Shoreline Park site. Artwork should be inspired by and responsive to both the site and the proposed park design, including its natural habitats, physical landscape, site history, sustainability, and program. It should also be a point of discovery and have a cohesive narrative experience along trails of the park; serve as an asset for the community and expression of neighborhood identity; and provide a community benefit, which includes providing opportunities for artists with a meaningful connection to the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood in San Francisco. Monuments and Memorials   October is Zero Waste Month October’s sunny skies and green grass mean its time for a picnic. It’s also Zero Waste Month, so we hope you’ll reduce single use plastics and choose to reuse for picnics, parks and our planet. By reducing consumption of single-use plastics, you help break free from forever petrochemicals. Recycling is not the answer, rethinking our role in our ecosystem is. We challenge you to bring your own containers and refuse disposables. See what a world of difference it can make! When buying food, choose products with little or no plastic packaging If you order food from a restaurant, bring your own containers for take-out and leftovers Don’t deal with plastic cutlery – a real fork and metal straw are great items to keep in your bag Bring your own cup for coffee is back, and many cafes offer a discount A reusable water bottle keeps your drinks cooler and without waste.    Upcoming Events Fleet Week in San Francisco through October 11 Fleet Week is back in San Francisco through October 11.
