JFK Promenade Stone Masons at Japanese Tea Garden through October 25 The stone masons have arrived from the Tatsuyama quarry to work on installing the stones on the base of the pagoda at the Japanese Tea Garden! Representatives from Takasago city, where the quarry is located, were also on hand to mark this occasion. The stone and labor of these masons is being donated from the local and national chambers of commerce in Japan. It was organized by Hoichi Kurisu, a renowned designer of Japanese gardens, and his team, who are providing design and direction. Work will be occurring through October 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the base of the pagoda. Swing by and check out this specialized work and the detailed style of the design! SF Standard Hunters View Residents Visit the EcoCenter in Heron's Head Park Hunters View residents recently visited the EcoCenter in Heron's Head Park for a field trip in collaboration with the YMCA of San Francisco. It consisted of a tour of the facility, a nature walk in the park, and free lunch. EcoCenter in Heron's Head Park Bayview United Earns Victory Against Blue Eagles, Remain Undefeated Bayview United faced off against the Blue Eagles this past weekend at Crocker Amazon Playground, taking an early 4-0 lead heading into the half. The Blue Eagles got two goals back to start the second half, but Bayview United was able to extend their lead and win the game 9-2. Bayview United players Jakar’ee Ross, Colt Martinez and Ari Robinson each scored three goals, earning a rare triple hat trick. In its 4th season, this team remains undefeated through five games with two wins and three draws, showing immense growth since its inaugural season. They currently sit fourth in the standings and are only four points behind the league leading Fighting Orcas. Bayview United is San Francisco's first Black youth soccer team for boys and girls, grades K-6. Since 2019, this equity driven program aims to increase access in the Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) community to the world’s game. It has set out to create a top tier soccer program with its home field at Youngblood Coleman Playground, and is open to players of all backgrounds and experience levels in the BVHP community. Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse Received AIACA Special Commendation We're excited to share that the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse received a special commendation from the American Institute of Architects, California (AIACA) for its design. Built in 1901 as the home of San Francisco’s first electric railway, the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse is one of the last physical reminders of the system. The adaptive reuse of the building transforms a dilapidated historic landmark into a cultural hub. Throughout the space, the interplay of new and old enlivens the reading of each, creating a revitalized historic building that serves the community once more while honoring its past. A special thanks to the Aidlin Darling Design for their work on this project. Read more at the link below and watch its opening video here. Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park Normani might only be 7 months old, but it’s pretty apparent that her preferred park is Golden Gate Park, according to her dad Drew. He said they frequent the JFK Promenade almost daily. “She’s absolutely growing up in the parks. Living near so many, we’re always at them. Her favorite is probably Golden Gate,” Drew said of the tot. “She likes when I turn her stroller around outfacing so she can see everything. She honestly really likes when we walk by the tennis courts, watching people play tennis and watching the ball bounce.” He added, “Before becoming car-free, JFK was inviting, but it wasn’t the same. Now, I see so many kids, people with strollers, and it’s just something that I appreciate having and I can’t imagine the JFK Promenade not being here.” People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park. Monuments and Memorials October is Zero Waste Month October’s sunny skies and green grass mean its time for a picnic. It’s also Zero Waste Month, so we hope you’ll reduce single use plastics and choose to reuse for picnics, parks and our planet. By reducing consumption of single-use plastics, you help break free from forever petrochemicals. Recycling is not the answer, rethinking our role in our ecosystem is. We challenge you to bring your own containers and refuse disposables. See what a world of difference it can make! When buying food, choose products with little or no plastic packaging If you order food from a restaurant, bring your own containers for take-out and leftovers Don’t deal with plastic cutlery – a real fork and metal straw are great items to keep in your bag Bring your own cup for coffee is back, and many cafes offer a discount A reusable water bottle keeps your drinks cooler and without waste.
