SF Zoo Wins Sustainability Award

We are excited to announce that the San Francisco Zoological Society was recently honored with the Sustainability Award by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce during its 2022 Excellence in Business Awards ceremony. The honor recognizes our commitment to sustainable practices in our operations, our animal wellness initiatives and conservation messages throughout SF Zoo & Gardens. Importantly, we believe that our Members and guests can play a keen role in our future as we work to provide meaningful ways to connect our guests with concepts of sustainability.  Bravo, all!

Celebrate Boo at the Zoo This Weekend!

Boo at the Zoo (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3952515295&e=7683a9aed3)  returns this weekend with Halloween events perfect for the entire family:

At noon on Saturday and Sunday, participate in a family-friendly costume parade and contest with prizes awarded in three categories: Best Costume, Best Family Costume and Best Animal Costume. The costume parade and contest will begin at the flamingo habitat near the Leaping Lemur Cafe and end at the Friend Family Playground!

And this Sunday, as we get closer to Halloween, we will have two extra-spooky events: the first 10 families to arrive at the Fisher Family Farm in our Youth Exploration Zone can help our animal care teams make special Halloween "enrichment" items for the wellness of our animals. Then, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., meet our spooky Ambassador Animals at the Koret Animal Resource Center in our Youth Exploration Zone.

Lastly, after seeing our endangered or rescued animals, don't forget to find your bag of treats as you leave San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. Happy Halloween!

Join us for the last weekend of ZOOtoberfest! Whether you're wearing a costume or not, enjoy the Zoo's temporary "Brew Haus" near the Playfield Cafe and Lawn where you'll find a great selection of brews, including our very own "Zoo Beer," crafted by Strike Brewing. And if you're without costume, ZOOtoberfest merchandise will be available for purchase, including shirts, sweatshirts, glasses and koozies. Make sure to bring a blanket to enjoy a full smorgasbord of German-inspired dishes and dine to the upbeat sounds of music by the Amato Bralove Combo from 12 p.m.–4 p.m.
Visit the Insect Zoo this Spooky Season

Ghosts at SF Zoo?!! The Phyllocrania paradoxa is the “ghost mantid,” a species of praying mantis found in Africa and Madagascar. At around five cm. in length, it is amongst the smaller mantid species. It sports an elaborate “headdress” appendage that serves to break up its profile and make it look more like a leaf. This Halloween season, see if you can spot this ghost in our Insect Zoo located in our Exploration Zone!

"Boo-ling For Rhinos" at the Presidio Bowl

The American Association of Zoo Keepers invites you to "Boo-ling," or Bowling for Rhinos (BFR) on October 30 at Presidio Bowl! This ticketed event raises funds to support Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the International Rhino Foundation and Action for Cheetahs in Kenya. These sanctuaries not only save rhinos and cheetahs but entire ecosystems. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=82ed6ecd6d&e=7683a9aed3) and includes pizza, soft drinks, a silent auction and of course—bowling! Children under 12 are free with an adult paid admission.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Every election is important, and this is a friendly reminder that Election Day is Tuesday, November 8, 2022. For San Francisco voters, of significance is Proposition I, which, if passed, would overturn an ordinance that closes the Great Highway (and the adjacent Zoo entry) south of Sloat Blvd. on weekends and holidays.
