ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Celebrating California Biodiversity Day

California Biodiversity Day is coming up on September 7th and we want you to come by for a visit to celebrate! California is full of beauty and wonder and is the most biologically diverse state in the country. It is listed as one of 36 biodiversity hotspots throughout the world as it has the highest number of plant and animal species and highest number of endemic species, which are those that occur nowhere else in the world. Despite its abundant diversity, threats to California's ecosystem puts nearly 30% of the species found there at risk of extinction.

You can see a few examples of California's magnificent animals right here at our very own California Conservation Corridor. This exhibit tells the story of California's native species and which highlights the work of the Zoo's conservation department, including the Western pond turtle, San Francisco forktail damselfly and red-legged frog. We hope to raise awareness of why it's important for everyone to do their part to protect the natural world around us, especially right here in our own backyard.

In celebration of California Biodiversity Day, we want to give a shout out to our own Gail Secchia, who was honored for the prestigious Jefferson Award this past Spring. Gail’s passion and commitment to sharing her love of gardening, pollinators and native plants through her namesake Gail’s Fragrance Garden at the Zoo is a testament to what individuals can do to help our planet thrive. Come celebrate our beautiful state by visiting native plants in Gail’s Fragrance Garden and more on this important day.
Cool Off at the Coast for Labor Day Weekend

Summer may be coming to a close with Labor Day approaching but the weather in San Francisco is only getting better! Come and enjoy the sunshine and cool off at the coast to enjoy all the fun SF Zoo has to offer. Whether it's a ride on the Carousel or the Little Puffer, or a stroll through the African Savanna or Bear Country, you are bound to make memories to last a lifetime. And don't forget to stop by the dazzling dahlias near the Station Cafe for a pop of color!
New Chimp Termite Mound

It takes a village to accomplish big things and our zoo family is no different. Our Maintenance Team works tirelessly behind the scenes every day to keep our facilities and animal exhibits operating. You name it, they repair and maintain it. They also help staff with exhibit design projects like the brand new 6-foot-tall termite mound for our chimpanzee troop. This type of enrichment encourages foraging and problem-solving to get at their food just like their wild counterparts. Chimps use tools to help them find food as they poke sticks or twigs into termite mounds to pull out and eat the insects inside. Here at SF Zoo, we fill the tubes that fit in the holes with a wide variety of items from oatmeal to applesauce which the chimps love. Thank you to our amazing teams for creating this awesome enrichment for our chimps!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

On August 30th, we celebrated our male African lion, Jasiri's, 7th birthday! Jasiri was born right here at SF Zoo 7 years ago to mom Sukari and it has been such a joy to watch him grow. We are proud to celebrate this incredible ambassador who helps to educate our guests about the importance of lion conservation. Make sure to stop by Cat Kingdom to see Jasiri in the newly expanded habitat on your next visit.
CONSERVATION CORNER

Earlier this summer, we became home to three yellow-crowned Amazon parrot chicks and they can now be seen in the South American Tropical Rainforest & Aviary! This exhibit focuses on the ongoing crisis created by wildlife trafficking, as illegal smuggling has threatened the very existence of many animal and plant species. The three parrots were confiscated at the point of entry into the U.S. and placed here by USFWS. Unfortunately, birds native to South and Central America that are illegally smuggled represent one of the largest threats to South American birds and we are proud to help tell this important story.
Members in good standing are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the San Francisco Zoological Society on September 20th. The main item of business will be the election of officers & directors, as well as any proposed amendment(s) to the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. For more information on timing and registration, please contact annualmeeting at sfzoo.org (mailto:annualmeeting at sfzoo.org) .
