Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements India Basin Community Day Celebrates Restoration of 900 Innes Thank you to everyone who came out to our India Basin Community Day this past Saturday. The event featured kayaking, rock climbing, kite making/flying and community! The event celebrated the recent restoration of the land, shoreline and shallow waters at 900 Innes Ave., which has cleared the way for construction to begin on one of the most significant park projects in the city’s history— India Basin Waterfront Park. Read more about this environmental cleaning and the project at the link below and stay tuned for a groundbreaking date for this project. Shoreline Cleanup Complete at 900 Innes   Work Begins to Transform JFK Drive to a Promenade The JFK Promenade is getting a glow-up to become an even more welcoming space for all visitors—complete with vibrant decorative paint celebrating Golden Gate Park. This past Monday, we began work to transform the road into a promenade by removing old roadway striping to make way for decorative painting to begin. Crews will be out on JFK between 6th and 10th avenues and at JFK/ Kezar drives, grinding away the old roadway markings. You might see some dust from this work, but we’ll direct Promenade visitors around the construction areas with cones, and thoroughly sweep up afterward. We expect the grinding work to take approximately three weeks to complete. After that, these two decorative works—one at 8th Ave, and one at Kezar—will soon be welcoming you to the Promenade. We appreciate your patience as we continue the transformation of JFK!   People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park 100-year-old Arnie has witnessed San Francisco make some big changes since he first moved to the city in 1957. One place that continues evolving for the better is Golden Gate Park, he says. The JFK Promenade is a 3-minute stroll from his second home--the San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club. He’s been coming here for the past 32 years. “I came one day to try it and I liked it, and I’ve been stuck on it ever since,” he said. “I enjoy the open air, and all the good people that are around. I really enjoy everything about it. It’s really a community… and this is about the cheapest thing you can find compared to other sports.” And if you’re wondering what's Arnie’s secret to longevity, it’s simple: outdoor activity! “When I was about 90 years old, I figured ‘I’m going to pass out and whither in a couple years. What’s the sense of going?’ But then, I just kept on going and now I’m 100 years old.” On his most recent birthday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared July 26, 2022, Arnie Barros Day. People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park.   SF Examiner: The Mayor of San Francisco Parks Check out the recent San Francisco Examiner article that profiles San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg.
