Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements India Basin Waterfront Park at 900 Innes Groundbreaking September 14 We're excited to announce we will break ground on the construction of the India Basin Waterfront Park Project on Wednesday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to noon. The event will feature a special ceremony, refreshments, and view of the newly cleaned site. Work will include rehabilitation of the Historic Shipwright's Cottage, as well as construction of a food pavilion, shop building, two new piers, a floating dock and more. India Basin Waterfront Park   Finishing Touches put on MLK Drive Traffic Pattern in Golden Gate Park Last Friday, Rec and Park and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) installed the last K-rails for the new traffic flow pattern for the stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Drive in Golden Gate Park between Chain of Lakes Drive and Sunset Boulevard. This new roadway configuration will lessen southbound congestion on Chain of Lakes Drive by giving vehicles an additional option to exit the park via an eastbound, one-way lane on MLK Drive and Sunset Boulevard. To mark this occasion, District 4 Supervisor Gordon Mar, SFMTA Director Jeffrey Tumlin and members of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition rode through Golden Gate Park to see the new improvements, including the protected lane for bicyclists and pedestrians. Read more about the traffic pattern at the link below. MLK Drive Traffic Pattern   People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park Keeping up with Alex and Anna—both avid pickleball players and bicyclists—can be a challenge. But every now and then the couple likes to take walks along the JFK Promenade, occasionally stopping by the Conservatory of Flowers to smell the dahlias. The lovebirds moved to San Francisco just over a year ago from Philadelphia, and haven’t looked back since. “We wanted a change of scenery,” said Anna. “We went on a road trip during the pandemic and got to do a lot of national parks and be outside. And we were like, ‘Why don’t we live somewhere where we can be outside and do all these sorts of things all the time." Even though Anna and Alex are naturally outdoorsy, the JFK Promenade encourages them to step out more often. “It’s so inspiring seeing people do their thing out here; bikers, rollerbladers, people playing volleyball. It’s just really inviting, and I feel like that’s pushed us more to be outside every day,” Anna said. Next on their to-do list: skate boarding along the Promenade and rolling around Skatin’ Place! People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park.   Art Proposals for the Ocean Beach Climate Change Adaptation The San Francisco Arts Commission is conducting a review process to choose an artist to create a sculpture or series of sculptures for the new Ocean Beach Climate Change Adaptation Project. The artwork should be inspired by or respond to climate change. With the plaza’s proximity to the beach and ocean, the artwork should be constructed of durable materials and able to withstand harsh weather conditions.
