ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Cool Off by the Coast

San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is uniquely located along the coast where three marine sanctuaries merge to form one of the richest ecosystems in the world. This wonderful location along the ocean also helps keep our weather a bit cooler than the rest of the Bay Area. During this heatwave, SF Zoo is the perfect place to come to beat the heat and connect with some of the magnificent plants and animals we share our planet with.
The Harvest Hallow Hay Maze Returns this Fall!

We are thrilled to announce the return of the Harvest Hallow Hay Maze! Come explore San Francisco's largest hay maze beginning September 17. It will be open every day through Halloween and is of course free for Zoo Members!
Keeping Hooves Healthy

Regular and proactive hoof care is a key element in progressive animal care for ungulate species, and our staff uses positive reinforcement training to teach animals to voluntarily participate in hoof trimming procedures. Our team was recently joined by our farriers and mentors at the Zoo Hoofstock Trim Program to work with our Family Farm team to complete the Zoo's first voluntary hoof trim on one of our kune kune pigs during a training session. Farriers also joined giraffe staff to achieve the Zoo’s first completely voluntary trim on Barbro the giraffe! During training, Barbro places the requested foot on a block and relaxes her fetlock joint, allowing her lower leg to bend and the bottom of her foot to be exposed for trimming. This kind of care requires teams of staff who work together to ensure success. Congratulations to all for this remarkable teamwork!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

Last weekend, we celebrated turkey vulture, Monty, in honor of International Vulture Awareness Day! Monty, who resides in the Koret Animal Resource Center (ARC), hatched in 2006 and was found as a hatchling with injuries and imprinted on humans and was thus donated to SF Zoo. Turkey vultures are vital to the health of our planet and are highly efficient scavengers as they likely help to limit the spread of deadly diseases. Become a vulture advocate by teaching other about vultures, attend or host a habitat cleanup, and make donations to any AZA SAFE partner projects focusing on vulture conservation.
CONSERVATION CORNER

Brown pelicans have returned to the Bay Area from their southern range. Just off Zoo grounds, you can see brown pelicans flying in formation above the shallower waters of Ocean Beach, searching for fish. Brown pelicans hunt for fish using a plunge diving technique, which is unique among pelican species. They will head straight into the water to scoop up their prey. Brown pelicans were impacted by the use of the pesticide DDT, as they are one of the only birds to incubate their eggs underneath their feet instead of under their breast. DDT makes egg shells fragile and the eggs cannot withstand the pressure from the pelicans' unique way of incubating. The banning of DDT has helped brown pelicans make a comeback and now these majestic birds can be seen gliding near Zoo grounds in especially large numbers due to an influx of anchovies in local waters. You can also see our own brown pelicans in the lake in Bear Country!
Members in good standing are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the San Francisco Zoological Society on September 20th. The main item of business will be the election of officers & directors, as well as any proposed amendment(s) to the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. For more information on timing and registration, please contact annualmeeting at sfzoo.org (mailto:annualmeeting at sfzoo.org) .
