Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements San Francisco Breaks Ground on India Basin Waterfront Park Bayview-Hunters Point community members and city officials broke ground today at the site of the future India Basin Waterfront Park, a significant milestone for those who have helped shape the historic park project from its conception. The park project will combine 900 Innes Avenue with two existing parks that border it: India Basin Shoreline Park and India Basin Open Space, both of which will undergo significant improvements as part of the broader vision. Once complete, the seamless 10-acre park will include gathering docks; an accessible walkway and stairs to connect once-isolated neighborhoods with the shoreline, gardens, and natural habitats; a public plaza for fitness classes, performances and farmers markets; a lighted pedestrian and bicycle path that will close a gap in the Bay Trail, eventually linking the Embarcadero to Candlestick Point; and an ecological education area where visitors can observe tidal mudflat habitats and native birds through small paths, decks, and viewing platforms. Community members who have undergone construction training through the project’s workforce development program will be among the professionals building the heart of the park. Workers will also restore the site’s Shipwright’s Cottage, a city landmark built in 1875 to serve the neighborhood’s union wooden boatbuilding business. The once-in-a-generation environmental justice project is a partnership between the Bayview-Hunters Point community, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, A. Philip Randolph Institute, San Francisco Parks Alliance, and Trust for Public Land. India Basin Shoreline Park is guided by an Equitable Development Plan (EDP), a first for San Francisco, with the goal of delivering a park designed by and for Bayview-Hunters Point. SF Breaks Ground on India Basin Waterfront Park People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park Being active is a priority for Cody, 80, who comes to the JFK Promenade several times a week to bike. Having lived in San Francisco since 1967, Cody remembers the days when car-free JFK Drive was only a thing on Sundays. Now that it's seven days a week, the whole landscape of Golden Gate Park has transformed, he said. “It’s much more pleasant to ride without having to pay attention to cars and it’s obviously much safer. It’s also nice to see on weekends when more people are out. It’s a nice community feel,” he said. “It’s certainly changed the atmosphere and usability for people who are not driving. It allows this to feel more like a park.” Never shy about his love for San Francisco, you can oftentimes catch Cody biking in his signature San Francisco Wheelmen shirt—an homage to the historical club that once dominated the local cycling scene. People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park.
