ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Celebrating World Gorilla Day on September 24th
Tomorrow, we're celebrating the largest primate species during World Gorilla Day! September 24th was selected for this special day because it is the date famed primatologist, Dian Fossey, founded the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda in 1967. Until that time, gorillas were often portrayed in media as brutish villians. Dr. Fossey helped us to see gorillas as gentle giants who prefer to avoid physical conflict whenever possible and have each other's backs.
We're celebrating at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens with our resident gorillas, Oscar, Bawang, Monifa and Kimani. Like most primates, gorillas are social and form "groups" or "families." Like with humans, meal time is a good time for gorillas to bond. Our females often settle down near each other to eat the forage spread throughout the yard and if you are close enough, you can hear them "grumbling," which is a happy gorilla vocalization. Every day our gorillas eat twenty-seven heads of greens, two tubs of celery and two large tubs of assorted chopped veggies, as well as acacia and other browse grown and harvested by our horticulture team. They additionally get primate chow, root vegetable and fruit, which is used for training or enrichment as these are their favorite foods.
If you want to help gorillas in the wild, you can bring any old cell phones, tablets, iPods/mp3 players, headphones, chargers or adaptors to the collection box at the front of the zoo in the membership office. We will send them in to be recycled with Eco-Cell, a green waste company that supports Gorillas on the Line. A portion of the proceeds raised will be donated towards gorilla conservation projects. Recycling old electronics additionally helps by limiting our need to mine coltan, a conflict mineral that is found in eastern Africa in prime gorilla habitat. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Last weekend, we celebrated International Red Panda Day. As both a flagship and umbrella species, protecting the red panda goes hand in hand with protecting its forest habitat and the other animals that call it home. Their forest habitat continues to shrink due to logging and the spread of agriculture and this deforestation eliminates nesting sites and sources of their primary food. Check out the incredible work our friends at Red Panda Network (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=a39f2cf019&e=7683a9aed3) are doing to conserve wild red pandas. In honor of this special day, Tenzing practiced some painting and you can see the video here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=580b10e0fc&e=7683a9aed3) !
