Spring Fling and RPD Things   420 Celebration Returns to Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park San Francisco’s legendary 420 celebration will return to Golden Gate Park Thursday, drawing an estimated 20,000 cannabis fans and sparking a citywide effort to ensure the high spirits bring minimal hassles. A host of City departments and event organizer Sounds Bazaar will work together to mitigate impacts on surrounding neighborhoods. Among the efforts: 100 security guards, 163 portable toilets, free MUNI shuttles, extra parking control officers, robust clean-up crews and more. For the second year, regulated and tested cannabis products will be available for purchase and consumption at the event. As a result, nobody under 21 will be allowed to enter the fenced celebration area. Event staff will check identification and bags. No mass quantities of items intended for sale or distribution will be allowed and unpermitted vending is prohibited. Security will be placed at the entrances, emergency exits, sales area, and storage area. Entry begins at 10 a.m. for the festival, which starts at noon and ends at 5 p.m. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) expects significant congestion in the area from 3 to 7 p.m. and recommends motorists avoid the area in and around Golden Gate Park and allow extra time to reach destinations. Fourteen parking control officers will be on hand to prevent gridlock and ensure safe pedestrian crossing in the area. Walking, biking and transit are best as parking in the area is extremely limited. Traveling to the event, Route 7 and N-Judah are recommended. Leaving the event, SFMTA is providing free shuttles to Civic Center BART starting at 4 p.m. Board on JFK Drive and Conservatory Drive East near the event entrance. The Golden Gate Park Free Shuttle will have a modified route. Stops at Haight and Stanyan streets and McLaren Lodge will be closed and be replaced by a temporary stop at the Dahlia Dell. Earth Month in our Parks   Rec & Park Carpenters Building Lasting Park Memories In 2018, carpenter Tim Garren was a relatively new father with a 3-year-old at home. He had joined Rec and Park two years prior, and a part of his job included working on the Commemorative Bench Program, a partnership with the San Francisco Parks Alliance that provides an opportunity for individuals to honor family and friends with memorial plaques on park benches. That year, Tim received a bench assignment that hit home: a 3-year-old who had tragically passed away. Since then, Tim has made this responsibility a personal endeavor, along with his fellow carpenters. One of the first steps they took is optimizing their intake system to ensure that plaques are installed in a timely manner. One of the more heartbreaking but gratifying examples: expediting a plaque installation so a terminally ill San Franciscan could enjoy their final days on a bench named for them in their favorite park. They’ve also systemized their maintenance schedule for the benches in our system to help ensure that they stay in good condition, something that can be difficult in San Francisco’s foggy climate. Within this process, they have also taken the initiative to move memorial benches to more prominent areas, as park usage can change as time passes. Through this maintenance work on the hundreds of memorial benches in our parks, our carpenters often run into familiar names including prominent community members, acquaintances and even past Rec and Park colleagues, which brings this program even closer to their lives. It’s not just people though who hold parks as special places. Many pets have been memorialized through this program. One prominent place for this is Huntington Park, where late pets adorn many of the benches in the park where they frolicked and played. A recent plaque that was installed there was dedicated to three dogs, stating: “In Loving Memory of Luca, Samson, and Enzo. The goldens of Nob Hill who came for the snacks and stayed for the love.” Thank you to our carpenters who have made this work a priority and continue to ensure that parks remain a special place for San Franciscans in life and death. A special thanks as well as to our painters, iron workers, cement masons, heavy equipment operators, laborers, gardeners and partnerships team for their work in this program.    Wildflowers Blooming in San Francisco Parks With some extended sunny and dry weather, San Francisco's flowers are starting bloom, including the California poppy at Corona Heights Park. Check out our list of blooming wildflowers, as well as our parks where you can find them at the link below. When exploring our natural areas, be sure to remain on designated paths. Our natural areas are sensitive habitats that are home to a diverse array of animals, insects, and plants that rely on their environment remaining undisturbed. Enjoy the wildflowers from a distance and do not pick any.
