A big thank you to our August 11th supporters, including Hall Wines, YPO-Gold (NorCal) and the San Francisco Zoological Society.
Meet "Larry" the Gray Fox
You will soon be able to see one of our newest Zoo residents, a male gray fox! Named "Larry" after the late San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commissioner Larry Griffin, he is the first gray fox to live here in several decades. Gray foxes are common in the wild in California and neighboring states, ranging from southern Canada into most of the U.S. and into Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. They are relatively solitary, except during breeding season, and are distinguished by their black-tipped tail. Unlike other foxes, they do climb trees! You can find "Larry" in the habitat adjacent to the mandrills very soon!
Become a Zoo Docent!
You've no doubt seen our intrepid Zoo Docents out and about and all around the Zoo during your visit. These knowledgeable individuals are among our greatest assets as they share information about wildlife, wild places and fun facts about our animal residents. For those of you interested in volunteering as a Zoo Docent, we are hosting a Docent Program Informational Event on Sunday, August 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the large classroom of the Lurie Education Building.
The program includes a detailed presentation about the docent program followed by a complimentary Zoo tour and a hands-on demonstration on the use of our biofact cart (biological artifacts like skulls, bones and feathers). Enjoy light refreshments while connecting with others who share your passion for animals and our planet! Limited space is available. RSVP to docent at sfzoo.org (mailto:docent at sfzoo.org) .

Happening in August!
World Lizard Day is August 14th!
August 14th is World Lizard Day! While no one is quite sure how this unusual holiday got its start, it doesn't make it any less fun to celebrate. Lizards are reptiles characterized primarily by scaly skin, long bodies and tail, and moveable eyelids. Most lizards lay eggs although some give birth to live young. There are about 6,000 lizard species found on every continent except Antarctica. Lizards are cold-blooded or ectothermic getting their body heat from external sources. Lizards range in size from less than an inch (the tiny dwarf gecko) to over 11 feet. At SF Zoo, we currently care for 19 lizards of 11 different species including two of the largest lizard species, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). “Rinca” and “Sikka”, our resident Komodos, can be seen hanging out in the heated Komodo dragon exhibit. Komodo dragons are an endangered species as are almost 250 different lizard species.
