Saving Species from Extinction (SAFE)
As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), you may have heard us talking about SAFE programs and wondered, "what are they?" Conservation is a priority for AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and is a key component of our missions. Happening in September!
Save the Koala Month

It was only a few short years ago when large-scale bushfires caused massive destruction in Australia, severely impacting Australia's wildlife. Today, many species are still slow to recover, among them, koalas, Australia's iconic mammal species. While the bushfires had a devastating effect on koalas, deforestation for human development has also led to habitat loss. The month of September is recognized as Save the Koala Month and September 29th is Save the Koala Day. We are fortunate to be among the few U.S. zoos to share this unique species with you since their arrival here in 1985. What can you do to save endangered koalas in the wild? Climate change, habitat loss and clearing of trees all impact koalas' survival. There are many conservation organizations that you can support, including the Australian Koala Foundation (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=ef4cd14419&e=7683a9aed3) and the World Wildlife Foundation Australia (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3ac1bda88b&e=7683a9aed3) .
