SF Bay Sox Rec & Park's Nicola Bosco-Alvarez Receives Garza Wonder Award We're excited to share that our own Nicola Bosco-Alvarez was one of five recipients of the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Garza Wonder Award. The award is named after Maria Jose Garza Asencios Suárez, a transgender Latina woman who was a community activist and recruiter for HIV studies, while also founding the nonprofit House of Garza. The award goes to inspiring individuals that embody what Maria stood for and have demonstrated exceptional commitment, tireless efforts and a profound impact on advocating for and supporting the LGBTQIAA+ community. Nicola, a recreation coordinator and the director and choreographer for the Young People’s Teen Musical Theatre Company (YPTMTC), has consistently made artistic space available and showcased the talents of artists in the LGBTQIAA+ community at Harvey Milk Center for the Arts and with YPTMTC. Through embracing the legacy of the late Supervisor Harvey Milk, she has made intentional spaces for self-expression in hopes to provide more understanding, inclusivity, and respect for diversity. Thank you Nicola for all that you do for San Francisco, and for building stronger communities through our parks! SF Marina Project Coyote Pupping Season Coming to a Close We are approaching the tail end of summer and that means coyote pupping season is waning and many pups are getting ready to leave their parents and strike out on their own. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, they are starting to explore the city for new dens. That means you might see more coyotes roaming your neighborhood. To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors, please take the following precautions: Keep dogs leashed and cats indoors. While rare, small dogs and cats can be viewed as prey. Keep both your pet and coyotes safe by staying vigilant. Do not approach coyotes, and instead admire them from a distance. If a coyote approaches you, pick up small children or pets, be loud and retreat slowly from the area. If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at ACC at sfgov.org. This helps us better understand and track coyote hotspots across the city. For more information, visit ACC's page on urban wildlife at the link below.
