First Time Look at Phase 1 of Madagascar Center!
We are excited to announce that the first phase of our much anticipated Lipman Family Madagascar Center will open to the public starting Friday, September 1st, just in time for Labor Day Weekend. This sequence of the overall project features a new outdoor habitat for our female fossa located on the elevated boardwalk leading from the Lipman Family Lemur Forest. (A lower level fossa habitat will not have animals at this time.) You will also be able to visit the giant replica Baobab tree, which can be entered from the upper level where you'll find a variety of Malagasy invertebrate species. The fossa is Madagascar's largest carnivorous mammal and the island's apex predator; listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. As part of this phase, you will now be able to walk through the previously closed area, from African Savanna to the Leaping Lemur Café. Join us!
Upcoming Event: ART SAFARI
Join us for Art Safari, a fun, interactive weekend to let your creative juices flow! On Saturday & Sunday, September 16 & 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Playfield area and around the Zoo, San Francisco artists and art instructors will be on hand to guide guests through a hands-on process of creating art through chalk drawings, origami, art workshops and more. Led by the Zoo's Artist-in-Residence, Henry Jackson, art and animals become one! Watch muralists paint artwork on otherwise blank fence lines, enjoy wine tasting and more! Art Safari is Free with Zoo membership or paid Zoo admission.

Celebrate Read a Book Day with Special Offer
In celebration of Read a Book Day on Wednesday, September 6th, spend $100 at the Zoo Gift Shop and receive a free children's book while supplies last. The wonderful, charmingly illustrated book, "Anne and her Tower of Giraffes" by Karlin Gray and Aparna Varma, tells the story of trailblazing giraffologist Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, who was the first Western scientist to study giraffes in the wild starting in 1956. The story follows Anne's growing interest in giraffes as a young girl to her lifelong research and the challenges she faced along the way. The book is a testament to Dr. Dagg's dedication to understanding and protecting the world's largest land animal. Visit the Gift Shop, spend $100 and receive this inspiring book!
Happening in September!
Monarch Butterflies on the Move

The Fall monarch migration has begun!

The states north and east of California are beginning to see monarch butterflies departing and they will continue moving toward their overwintering sites along the California coast over the next two months. September and October are the best months to spot monarchs flying around the Zoo's pollinator gardens. Unfortunately monarch butterflies have experienced dramatic declines in recent years. Western populations have decreased by as much as 95%. Major reasons include habitat loss, pesticide use, disease and climate change. This Fall, you can help us Play it SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) in five key ways:
* Feed the migration by planting late blooming flowering plants.
* Keep caterpillars healthy by cutting back tropical milkweed.
* Plant monarch-SAFE plants, instead of plants treated with pesticides.
* Enjoy watching wild monarchs instead of rearing them indoors.
* Share monarch sightings with community scientists.
