In honor of National Ugly Holiday Sweater Day, celebrated on the third Friday of December each year, we encourage you to wear your festive ugly sweater on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 & 17 when you're strolling around the Zoo! By wearing an ugly sweater, you will receive $1 off general admission! Ugly sweaters do more than keep you warm, they are often eye-catching, funny and a great way to break the ice! Take photos of yourself and your guests, tag us at #sfzoo and we'll repost on our social channels. It's all in fun and we look forward to seeing you!
New VR is a Not-to-Miss Experience!

Come experience our awe-inspiring, immersive new virtual reality film, "Gorilla Trek" to see critically endangered mountain gorillas in an emotional and entertaining documentary. By donning high-tech VR goggles and being seated in a motion platform theater chair, your first-hand, close-up observations of mountain gorilla troop begins! All ages are welcome, Zoo Members receive a discounted price. Each showing is 10-12 minutes in length.

Gorilla Trek Overview
The 360-degree VR documentary follows primatologist Dr. Tara Stoinski of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund on a trip into the dense and unforgiving Volcanoes National Park. Dr. Stroinski leads the VR experience while documenting the family dynamics of a majestic and critically endangered group of mountain gorillas. The film takes guests deep in to the forest where they experience frolicking baby gorillas playing under their mother’s watchful eyes while the alpha silverback protects his family and subordinate males vie for leadership.

Follow the Nutcracker Scavenger Hunt

SF Ballet and SF Zoo have teamed up for a fun Nutcracker scavenger hunt in honor of their wonderful seasonal production of San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker now at the War Memorial Opera House. Come to the Zoo, follow the clues based on animals seen in the Nutcracker and scan the code to get the link to their scavenger hunt page! As a special offer to friends of the Zoo, SF Ballet is offering a 20% discount on tickets during the show run from December 13-30, including a special Sensory Friendly Performance on Saturday, December 30th. Support for Gorillas on the Line
SF Ballet is also supporting our Gorillas on the Line (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=a9543c7e07&e=7683a9aed3) campaign to save gorillas and gorilla habitat. Your donation of used cell phones or small electronic devices supports the work of Eco-Cell, which recycles and generates funds for gorilla conservation. By recycling used devices, we save pristine gorilla habitat where minerals used in cell phones are mined. Drop off your devices in the lobby of the War Memorial Opera House, or visit SF Zoo's Concierge Office.
HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
Winter Solstice

December 21st marks the winter solstice, which you may know as the "shortest day of the year" and when the sun is the farthest south from the equator, resulting in the least sunlight and the longest night! The day also marks our official first day of winter. Do our animals see the difference?  It would depend on the animal; some animals, like birds, feed during daylight hours (though some nocturnal birds, like owls hunt at night), so a shorter day will cut into the time they are feeding. And of course, other animals here are nocturnal, like our wolverines (and they also love the snow!). Already evident of a more low energy timeframe are the grizzly and black bears, who are currently in a state of torpor. Winter here in California is unlike other areas around the country, in that there are really no extreme weather patterns.
