Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements City’s Newest Pickleball Complex Opens at Carl Larsen Park Eight new pickleball courts opened at Carl Larsen Park earlier this week, the latest added by Rec and Park to meet soaring demand. Over the past five years, we've increased the number of public pickleball courts seven-fold, bringing the number of courts from just 12 in 2018 to more than 80 places to play. The new courts will be dedicated solely to pickleball—one of the fastest growing sports in the nation—seven days a week. Rec and Park led an extensive and robust community process with guidance from the Tennis Coalition of San Francisco and the leadership of the Pickleball Working Group, which provided an opportunity for a new site that accommodates eight dedicated fenced courts and the availability of parking and restroom access. The explosion of pickleball in recent years has led Rec and Park to work steadily to increase the number of places to play. Currently, we have 63 outdoor pickleball courts and 24 indoor pickleball facilities, including some recreation centers. Of those, 22 are dedicated courts, and five of the overall sites have dedicated pickleball hours. Demand for the sport continues to grow, with the organization USA Pickleball reporting a 30 percent increase in membership in 2022. To meet that demand, every tennis court that Rec and Park repaves now includes dual-painted lines for pickleball. Of our park system’s 139 tennis courts, more than 12 percent have been dual lined for pickleball—and more are on the way. Rec and Park is working to identify underused public spaces that can support future pickleball complexes. For more information, click the link below. City's Newest Pickleball Complex Opens Mayor Breed Celebrates the Reopening of Fillmore Turk Mini Park Thank you to Mayor London Breed, community organizations, and the Fillmore families who helped reopen Fillmore Turk Mini Park last Friday with a holiday celebration. The mini park’s $2.6 million community-led renovation creates a more comfortable green oasis in the heart of the historic neighborhood. Renovations include improved drainage, enhanced outdoor space and lawn, upgraded lighting, game tables, new benches that double as sculptures, and more. During the celebration, CHARM—a collaborative of City departments and nonprofits dedicated to youth and health kicked off the park’s traditional series of tree giveaways. The celebration was immediately followed by the Second Annual Holiday Night Market and Block Party at Fillmore and O'Farrell streets featuring live music, a kids’ wonderland, food trucks, and local vendors. The New Community Leadership Foundation was the catalyst for the park improvements beginning in 2016 after receiving $330,000 from the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond’s Community Opportunity Fund. San Francisco Beautiful served as NCLF’s nonprofit sponsor. In total, bond funding provided $1.6 million toward the project. A special thanks to former Supervisor Vallie Brown and TS Studio for providing additional support for this project, as well as to Noe Valley Bakery for providing cookies for the event! Fillmore Turk Mini Park Reopening Report: SF Parks Hit High Marks, Earn Gains in Equity San Francisco’s parks and plazas continued to earn top marks for maintenance over the past fiscal year, while two public spaces—Muriel Leff Mini Park in the Richmond District and Sunnyside Conservatory in the Sunnyside neighborhood—received perfect scores, according to a San Francisco Controller's Office report released earlier this week. Other highlights of the 2023 Park Maintenance Standards Annual Report include: Overall Park Maintenance Score: The citywide park maintenance score for the fiscal year 2022-2023 (FY23) stands at an impressive 91 percent. Equitable Distribution: Over the years, there has been a shift in the distribution of high- and low-scoring parks. While FY15 to FY19 saw a concentration of higher scoring parks in the northern part of the city, FY20 to FY23 witnessed a more equitable distribution. Equity Zone Performance: Parks in equity zones, neighborhoods that have faced past environmental injustices, maintained an average score of 89 percent in FY23, remaining unchanged from FY22. Over 60 percent of Rec and Parks’ capital dollars are invested in equity zones, which comprise 20 percent of the city’s park acreage. Additionally, the Bayview’s Hilltop Park and the Visitacion Valley Greenway tied for most improved park maintenance scores, both rising 15 points to 93 percent. The park maintenance report, now in its 16th year, serves as a valuable resource for decision making and transparency, aligning with Rec and Park’s strategic goals and the city's commitment to maintaining vibrant public spaces. This time of year, yearlings tend to seek out new territories and can often be seen wandering our streets. As they explore, let's make sure we're coexisting harmoniously: Leash Those Pups: If you're out with your four-legged friends, keep them on a leash when not in designated off-leash dog parks. It's not just a city law; it's a wildlife-friendly move. Lock It Up: Secure your trash cans and bring pet food inside to avoid tempting our coyote neighbors. A little extra precaution goes a long way. Respect Their Space: If you spot a coyote, maintain a safe distance. These creatures contribute to our city's ecosystem, so let's give them the space they need. Have you had any coyote encounters lately? Please report sightings to San Francisco Animal Care and Control at acc at sfgov.org. For more information, click the link below. Coyotes in the City Park Padel at Embarcadero Plaza Check out Park Padel's new one-year pop-up courts located in Embarcadero Plaza! Padel, frequently described as a cross between tennis and squash, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Like pickleball, padel is easy to learn, social, and usually played as a doubles game on a court about a third of the size of a tennis court. However, padel courts are bounded by glass walls, allowing players to hit the ball off multiple surfaces, much like squash. Free play with advanced reservation takes place Monday through Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information and to make a reservation, click the link below.
