Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Rec & Park Commission Approves South Sunset Clubhouse Design A plan to renovate the South Sunset Clubhouse, which serves as an important community hub for neighborhood seniors, is one step closer to becoming a reality after the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission approved a conceptual design last week. The clubhouse is located in South Sunset Playground, a 4-acre park that also features athletic fields, multiple sports courts, and a playground. Under the plan, the clubhouse will undergo a complete renovation and reconfiguration, including an updated kitchen, new sliding glass doors, upgrades to the two already existing restrooms as well the construction of a new additional restroom, and increased storage space. The plan also calls for landscaping improvements, access improvements, a new roof, renewed brickwork, new signage, and more. The organization Self-Help Elderly has operated the clubhouse for more than 30 years, providing some 200 seniors with hot meals daily, and offering dance classes, fitness classes, and more. The renovated space will help the organization better serve program participants, most of whom are monolingual Cantonese speakers, and ensure they remain stimulated through social interaction. The $5.3 million project received $3 million in funding through the City’s 2020 Health and Recovery Bond. State Assemblymember Phil Ting secured an additional $2.3 million in state budget funding. Winter Workouts Coyotes Exploring San Francisco Our Video of the Week is a recent clip of coyotes exploring Golden Gate Park. Have you noticed more coyotes in your neighborhood? This time of year, yearlings tend to seek out new territories and can often be seen wandering our streets. As they explore, let's make sure we're coexisting harmoniously: Leash Those Pups: If you're out with your four-legged friends, keep them on a leash when not in designated off-leash dog parks. It's not just a city law; it's a wildlife-friendly move. Lock It Up: Secure your trash cans and bring pet food inside to avoid tempting our coyote neighbors. A little extra precaution goes a long way. Respect Their Space: If you spot a coyote, maintain a safe distance. These creatures contribute to our city's ecosystem, so let's give them the space they need. Have you had any coyote encounters lately? Please report sightings to San Francisco Animal Care and Control at acc at sfgov.org. For more information, click the link below.
