Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Community Members Share Stories in Honor of Black History Month A special thanks to everyone who came by our storytelling corner at the Black History Month community celebration this past weekend in Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP). Residents shared personal stories of growing up and living in the neighborhood. These stories were captured for historical and contextual purposes as we build the new India Basin Waterfront Park. Thank you as well as to those who provided feedback on the San Francisco Arts Commission's artwork proposals for India Basin Shoreline Park, as part of the India Basin Waterfront Park project. India Basin Waterfront Park   Park Closures Due to Inclement Weather We have closed parks throughout the week due to windy weather and anticipate more closures this week with the upcoming winter storms. Use extra caution when walking or exercising in our parks as strong gusts can topple healthy trees and snap limbs. Stay up to date on park closures at sfrecpark.org.   Spring Senior Class Registration Begins on March 1 We are excited to share that registration for senior classes will now open with priority registration ahead of general registration dates. No more having to compete with adult, youth and tot registrations! For the spring session, senior class registration will begin on Wednesday, March 1 at 10 a.m. In addition to online registration at sfrecpark.org/register, we will offer walk-in registration for senior classes at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center (6101 Fulton Street) beginning at 10 a.m. on March 1. Senior Programming   Golden Gate Bandshell Shows Return on March 1 Live music will return for its third season at the Golden Gate Bandshell’s iconic stage with another series of free outdoor concerts in Golden Gate Park. The series, Illuminate Live, which kicks off on Wednesday, March 1, will bring more than 100 free concerts to the GGP Music Concourse in 2023. The lineup of performers returning to the stage is diverse and local as it was in its first two seasons. Shows will feature R&B, soul, jazz, funk, reggae, salsa, electronic music/EDM, big band musicians, string ensembles, indie and psychedelic rock bands and many diverse singer-songwriters. In honor of International Women's Day on March 8, all concerts throughout March will feature women or women-fronted bands. The season kickoff on March 1 will be a Market to Bandshell show produced in association with Sunset Mercantile and featuring three female singer-songwriters: Common De Nomi, Frances Ancheta Becker and Nikki Nash. Rec and Park Jobs   Greenager Program Accepting Applications for 2023 The Greenager Program is looking for rising 9th and 10th graders who live in or attend a school in the southeast or northeast neighborhoods of San Francisco. This youth stewardship and leadership program is a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and Port of San Francisco that runs from June through November. The program offers teens a chance to take a leadership role in the community by improving the city’s green spaces, creating place-based projects, and addressing important local issues. General work hours are Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with some weekdays. Compensations is $18.75 per hour.   To be a Greenager, the participant must meet the criteria below: Live in or attend a school in: Southeast San Francisco including supervisorial districts 9, 10, or 11 (Excelsior, Portola, Bayview, Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Crocker Amazon, or Potrero Hill, etc.) Northeast San Francisco including supervisorial districts 3, 5 or 6 (Western Addition, Tenderloin, Chinatown, etc.) Must be a 9th or 10th grade student in the 2022 school year (Can be a 11th or 12th grader if applying as a 2nd Year Peer Leader) Completed applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 10. Greenager Application   John Shelley Drive Community Meeting on February 23 Join us virtually for a community meeting on John Shelley Drive in McLaren Park on Thursday, February 23 at 6 p.m. Provide feedback on the future of John Shelley Drive, including a proposed car-free promenade segment on the western portion of the road. Topics for discussion include access and parking, and possible programming; as well as improving pedestrian and bike access on John Shelley Drive East and North. McLaren Park Vision Plan   Inner Sunset Transportation Townhall on February 27 Join District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar for an Inner Sunset Transportation Townhall at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park (1199 9th Avenue) on Monday, February 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The supervisor will host a conversation with SFMTA Director Jeffrey Tumlin, San Francisco County Transportation Authority Executive Director Tilly Chang, merchants, and neighbors on transportation, safety and the future of mobility in District 7. For more information and to RSVP, email melgarstaff at sfgov.org.   Upcoming Events   Black History Month and Lunar New Year Celebration on February 25 Join Supervisor Shamann Walton and community partners for the second annual District 10 Black History Month and Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Visitacion Valley Greenway (170 Teddy Avenue). Stop by for an afternoon of performances celebrating Black history and the Lunar New Year. There will be resource tables from local non-profits and government agencies at the Visitacion Valley Playground. We look forward to seeing you there!     Garden Resource Day on February 25 Join us for the return of our garden resource days in 2023! The first of the will take place on Saturday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free compost, mulch, plant starts and seeds. Compost will be limited to two 5-gallon buckets per person – bring your own buckets. These events will take place at the overflow parking lot at Gleneagles Golf Course (2100 Sunnydale Avenue), adjacent to the McLaren Bike Park. A waiting line will form on the north side of the street. Please approach from east to take a right turn into the parking lot. Urban Agriculture   SFYBL Opening Day at Kimbell Playground on February 25 Join us on Saturday, February 25 to throw out the first pitch on the 2023 baseball season!
