ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Female Andean Condor Now on Exhibit
Zoo visitors can now see our impressive 37-year-old female Andean condor, “Callista” in her new habitat across from the Lion House next to the giant anteater habitat. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a South American vulture species and considered the largest flying bird in the world with a wingspan of up to 10 feet. They are classified as “vulnerable to extinction” by the IUCN with approximately 6,700 adult condors remaining in the wild. Come see her soon!
Remembering Sukari
We are heartbroken to share that beloved African lioness, Sukari, passed away at the age of 20. Sukari, which means "sugar" in Swahili, was mom to Jasiri and was stoic in nature however once you got to know her, she would melt your heart. Sukari loved horse shanks, pork loin and goat's milk and was an incredible ambassador who helped educate our guests on the importance of lion conservation. She will be missed!

Celebrating Black History Month
As Black History Month comes to a close, we would like to acknowledge Peggy Shepard, an incredible environmentalist who is making a positive impact on our world. Shepard co-founded We Act For Environmental Justice (WAFEJ) in New York. Through Shepard’s influence, WAFEJ helps address environmental protection and environmental health policy issues, including ecological health, both within the local Northern Manhattan community and nationally. The organization partners with people of color and low-income populations, working to ensure that healthy environments are available to everyone. International Polar Bear Day - February 27th
International Polar Bear Day is on February 27th and as an Arctic Ambassador Center (AAC), we're proud to bring awareness to polar bears. February 27th coincides with the time period when polar bear moms and cubs are snug in their dens and this year's focus is to protect denning families, especially moms and cubs, across the Arctic. As more industry moves to the Arctic, it is more important than ever to protect denning habitats and help ensure the survival of every single cub. Learn about the "Top Mom and Cub Facts (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=6a2e7ea563&e=7683a9aed3) " from our friends at Polar Bears International (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=98c9f74c26&e=7683a9aed3) to celebrate.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Last week we celebrated pygmy hippo, Udo, for National Hippo Day! Pygmy hippos are related to the larger, river hippopotamus but are rarely seen in the wild because of their secretive, nocturnal habits. These hippos have different adaptations for a more terrestrial life, like proportionally longer legs and less webbed feet, compared to the Nile River hippo. They are listed as endangered due to habitat loss and poaching for bushmeat. We are grateful to Udo for being a wonderful ambassador for his wild counterparts.
In the case of high winds over the next week, we may have to close SF Zoo early for safety purposes. Please check our website for updates!
