A Visit to SF Zoo in the Rain
It’s officially the rainy season and it is truly a zoo-wide effort to prepare for this inclement weather. Each and every day, our staff works incredibly hard, regardless of the weather conditions, to provide the best possible care for our animals and to provide you, our guests, the safest visitor experience. Our animal care teams have to adjust how they set up their animal areas to allow animals additional access to shelter and heat. The animal care team also works closely with our Operations Department to keep heaters running strong and drains clean to prevent flooding, to ensure all humans and animals remain safe if trees fall in the storm and to fill and deliver sandbags. We are so appreciative of the great teamwork between departments always but especially during the rainy season!

Curious about what animals like the rain? Our snow leopards prefer it when it is cold and don’t mind the it. Greater one-horned rhino, Gauhati, loves to play in his pool during the rain and right across the way from him, our penguins often play in their pool during the rain. Either way, SF Zoo is always open for a good time, rain or shine! Make sure to keep an eye on our website for rain related updates.
Introducing Rinca, male Komodo dragon

Late last year, we welcomed the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in San Francisco to the Zoo. As part of the celebration, Consul General Hadi named our new male Komodo dragon. Our male dragon is "Rinca Damai." Rinca is one of the three largest islands in the Komodo region native to the dragons, and also symbolizes Indonesia's diversity, harmony, and cultural wealth and Damai means "peace" in Indonesian. Our female dragon is "Sikka Xena," which refers to the primary dialects spoken by native tribes on the Rinca Island. We look forward to to working closely with the Counsel General on our common goals of raising awareness about the conservation efforts we are both making to protect native endangered Indonesian wildlife.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

The bison in Golden Gate Park always enjoy Christmas tree enrichment. They love to throw the trees in the air with their horns and rub and scratch on fallen tree trunks. Check out some videos of the ten female bison enjoying the trees here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=88e70ab55d&e=7683a9aed3) .
