Change Your Way on Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day isn’t just about the superstition that a groundhog seeing its shadow will determine how long winter will last. It’s also a metaphor that refers to events or actions that recur over and over. Hence, it’s about making changes in your life, often for the better. On Thursday, February 2 – Groundhog Day – we invite you to make a change in your life, however big or small, such as riding a bike instead of driving, or avoiding single-use plastic. Annual Bird Count Takes Place

Audubon’s 123rd Christmas Bird Count took place in San Francisco in the pouring rain on December 27th. Five stalwart counters roved the zoo in search of birds and found a surprisingly large number. Forty one species were identified through visual sighting or from vocalization. Highlights for the Zoo count included several Lincoln’s sparrows, common yellowthroats and a red-breasted sapsucker - all of which haven’t been seen on grounds for a while. As an aside, the day after the bird count, zoo staff sighted a merlin near the Administrative trailers. Merlins have not been reported at the Zoo in over 20 years!
Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit During Lunar New Year

To commemorate the Year of the Rabbit, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is thrilled to host Lunar New Year celebrations! Lunar New Year (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=4ae10eb593&e=7683a9aed3) runs from January 22nd through February 5th, and during this time, we invite you to go on a Zodiac Scavenger Hunt through the Zoo to learn fun facts about the animals found on the Chinese calendar. On February 5th, soak up the ambiance of the occasion and marvel at traditional Chinese lion and dragon dance performances.

After a few weeks of consistent rain, our gardens are as lush as ever! It is so wonderful to see the beautiful blue skies and our gorgeous green gardens glowing in the sunshine. As you walk along the African Savanna, you will even see some proteas beginning to bloom. Come to explore all the wonderous pops of color this winter!
