Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements San Francisco Begins Operating 23 Acres of Public Parks in Mission Bay Mayor London Breed announced last week the City‘s plans to begin operating the more than 24 acres of public parks in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Rec and Park, along with The Port of San Francisco began jointly managing the space on July 1. It was overseen by the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII). Previously, OCII, formerly known as the Redevelopment Agency, operated the Mission Bay Parks through a private management company that handled the day-to-day operations, such as permits for special events, security, gardening, and janitorial duties. The parks system includes playgrounds, dog parks, picnic areas, boat launches, sport courts and pocket parks. Rec and Park is operating the Mission Creek Complex and its sport courts, dog play area, plazas, lawn, esplanades, pavilion, boathouse and launch. Additionally, the Department is overseeing Mariposa Park, Mission Bay Commons, the Channel Street Dog Park and the Mission Bay Kids Park. The Port of San Francisco is managing the Bayfront parks along the Bay and Terry Francois Boulevard. A community celebration will be held on Thursday, July 20 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Mission Creek Park Pavilion located at 290 Channel Street. For more information, visit our new Mission Bay Parks webpage at the link below. Mission Bay Parks Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month this July Happy National Park and Recreation Month! Each July since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) highlights the work of the nation’s 160,000 fulltime park and recreation professionals, along with hundreds of thousands of parttime and seasonal workers and volunteers. These dedicated employees and volunteers build strong, vibrant and resilient communities through maintaining local, state, and national parks and providing nature education, outdoor activities, arts and more for kids, adults and seniors. This year's theme — “Where Community Grows” — celebrates the vital role park and recreation professionals play in bringing people together, providing essential services and fostering the growth of our communities. Check out events, programs and activities in our parks this July that bring community together at the link below. Park and Recreation Month 'Scarlet' the Corpse Flower in Bloom at the Conservatory of Flowers Scarlet the Corpse Flower bloomed earlier this week at the Conservatory of Flowers (COF) in Golden Gate Park. The Corpse Flower is an infamously pungent, towering Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), which only blooms every three-to-five years, lasting about 48 hours. For more information, including tickets to potentially catch the tail end of this funky flower's bloom, or to watch it on a livestream feed, click the link below. Summer in the City: ASL Camp at Mission Playground Recreation and Parks' summer camps have kicked off all around the city, and we're visiting them to interview campers, staff and parents to discover their favorite parts of summer. Our American Sign Language (ASL) camp is offered at Mission Playground, serving ages 5 to 12. Many campers have some previous experience with ASL, however not many are fluent. Campers are immersed immediately in the world of ASL, using their hands, facial expressions, and actions to communicate with one another. Staff members are a mix of both hearing and deaf people; however, they are all fluent in ASL. Watching campers learn to sign new words every day and seeing that knowledge grow over six weeks is incredibly rewarding, said camp staffers Luis and Walter. Enjoying the sunshine while guiding field trips is also a highlight. Meanwhile, campers Campbell and Wyatt said their favorite days during camp are swim days and field trips. They also enjoy learning a new language. “I really like how ASL uses actions and movements instead of speaking, it is different than any other language,” Wyatt said. We look forward to sharing more from our camp families and staff throughout the summer. San Francisco Park Histories: Off-the-Beaten-Path at Brooks Park The wonderfully wild hilltop landscape of Brooks Park was a product of Helen and Jesse Brooks’ imagination. Residents are surprised to find this off-the-beaten-path enclave and its stone walls reminiscent of those surrounding agricultural or livestock fields created in 17th century New England. Starting in 1936 the couple constructed a house in the sparsely populated Merced Heights neighborhood with its panoramic views of the ocean and Peninsula. Over time Helen carted soil and rocks from the surrounding lowlands and created a walled garden with native plants and trees. It was noted decades later there were at least 30 native plant species on the property. Deciding to retire to the wilds of La Honda, they sold the property to the city in 1968 for the creation of a park. Vandals set fire to the house in 1970 and today its foundation remains on the property that is defined by stone walls and many trees. Park histories are written by by Rec and Parks' Historian-in-Residence Christopher Pollock. We look forward to sharing more of the rich histories of our parks throughout the summer.
