Thank you for our best year yet!
The 2022-23 school year was our BIGGEST year yet -- hosting over 900 programs, partnering with over 90 school and community organizations, opening a brand new third location, working with 10 interns, and launching an incredible life-sized mobile program! This year, we reached over 12,000 individual students -- each multiple times through all of our programs. It was a delight tinkering and experimenting with you all!
Field Trips & After-Schools
This school year we offered 850 field trips to our partner schools, seeing 12,000 students from 60 elementary, middle and highs schools, prioritizing our reach to Title-1 schools and providing all of our field trips free or highly subsidized!
We also partnered with 18 community organizations like YMCA (multiple locations), Mission Graduates, Boys and Girls Clubs, Mission Girls, Tenderloin Community Center and more, across 9 different SF districts to provide over 100 hands-on after-school programs.
In our programs, students enjoyed tinkering, building, and exploring -- they built motorized boats, birdseed ornaments, wooden planter boxes, fan-powered hovercrafts; tinkered with taking apart radios and desktop computers; and explored our exhibits, live animals, bones, fossils, and more!
Open Community Drop-in Days
This year, we hosted weekly free open drop-in days at our Excelsior and Mission Workshops every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, as well as three open community Saturdays per month at all three of our workshops -- so our communities can visit for free to build, explore and tinker together.
Welcoming our new Bayview Science Workshop
One of our biggest goals was achieved this year when in January 2023 we were able to open our third community science workshop in the heart of the Bayview District inside Dr Charles Drew College Preparatory Academy. We have already seen over 1500 students in this site and are very excited about partnering with even more schools and organizations in this district for fun and meaningful science.
Debuting our Giant Blood Vessel exhibit
This year we designed and built an amazing school-bus sized artery model, our newest traveling exhibit from our Excelsior Science Workshop. The Giant Walk-Through Blood Vessel gives participants the opportunity to walk inside an awe-inspiring giant-sized blood vessel, complete with cells, platelets, the sound of their heartbeat, and more. Students learn about their circulatory system, anatomy and health while also engaging in hands-on activities like our blood cell scavenger hunt, gas exchange game, losing and finding their veins under blue light, listening to their own heartbeats, and looking at red blood cells and blood vessels under the microscope.
Expanding our Youth Workforce Development program
This year, we had 10 fantastic paid interns from local high schools across our three workshops. They worked as teaching assistants, exhibit developers, artists in residence and youth mentors. Many of our HS interns were our students before in their youth. We are looking forward to continuing to expand our Workforce Development Program next year.
Whale on Wheels, Offsite Programs and More!
We offered more offsite programs than ever and brought our mobile programs to schools and communities that had a hard time reaching our community science workshop sites.
This school year we visited school sites to reach 2500 students with fun hands-on science experiences in South East San Francisco Title-I Schools and saw an additional 1500 students at their schools with our whale of wheels program.
Looking forward to next year!
We can't wait to continue the science fun with you all next year! And we have many new goals for next school year. Thanks to generous donations and our fundraising efforts, we will be offering more free field trips than ever before, making our programs accessible for the most high-need classrooms in the Bay Area. We also look forward to expanding our environmental education programming with hands-on activities about renewable energy, water and soil health, and climate change. We hope to pilot a "Girls in Science" after-school program at our Bayview workshop, which will be a free program open to local female students. And lastly, we hope to continue expanding our internship program, which proved to be a great experience for this year's interns, as well as our staff and students!
With three workshops now up and running, we will be able to serve more students than ever before, host three drop-in Saturday's per month (!), offer more free programs and mobile programs, and continue to find new ways to bring exciting hands-on science to youth and families. We could not do this work without your support -- thank you!
Thank you
Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers, interns, staff, donors, friends, supporters, community organizations and friends. We could not to this essential and impactful work without you. Gracias de corazón. Our youth, families and communities are stronger, more resilient and healthier when we all work together.
