A big thank you to our July 21st supporters, including Caldwell Banker and the San Francisco Zoological Society.
March of the Penguins is July 29th!

This year, we welcomed two chicks to our Magellanic penguin colony, the most successful breeding colony under human care since 1985! And as is the tradition, you can see them walk, waddle and make their way to their permanent home on Penguin Island during our annual March of the Penguins that will take place on Saturday, July 29th. The two chicks, now approximately two months old, are almost ready to graduate from "Fish School," where they are learning to socialize, walk, swim and to eat fish by hand. These are important life skills as they join our colony of 50+ penguins on Penguin Island.
Come early to see our chicks make their way home!
* 9 a.m. - Special Guardian member entry time. Guardians receive private Guardians-only VIP viewing section and continental breakfast. Reservations required.
* 9:30 a.m. - Zoo Member entry time.
* 10 a.m. - General public entry time
* 10:15 a.m. - March begins on the Lion House side of Penguin Island

If you are interested in becoming a Guardian member, contact Deb Howe in the Development office at debh at sfzoo.org. (mailto:debh at sfzoo.org)
You Can Name A Chick!

Members! Come to our Sunset Fridays event on July 21st or 28th and enter a name for the new male chick! A special entry box will be located at the Membership booth, located by the vendors. We'll announce the winning name at the July 29th March of the Penguins event!
Garden Tours Every Saturday!
Summer is a great time of year to see the beautiful blooms throughout the Zoo, and for all of you "anthophiles" (or lover of flowers!), you might just enjoy our hour-long botanical tour, taking place every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. This specially guided tour features a closer look at our many gardens, where you'll learn about plants, flowers, bushes, trees and even the browse that are fed to our animals each day. You'll see many threatened and rare plant species, and many varieties that are indigenous to animals' native habitats, like those found in Africa, South America and Australia. Importantly, these rare plant species support the biodiversity of our animal residents. Zoo Member and Non-Member pricing available; learn more and buy tickets here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=5aa1cefb27&e=7683a9aed3) .
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHT
Yellow-Legged Frogs Released in Yosemite

Last week, we released 200 Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs to Yosemite National Park. Of these, 125 were helicoptered out to the backcountry to repopulate a lake with a declining number of frogs. The remaining 75 were then released, followed by another 155 released after they were hiked out by Zoo and Park staff to several sites to bolster small meadow populations impacted by drought over the past several years.
In fact, these 355 frogs were collected and brought to the Zoo as a salvage effort to save tadpoles dying in drying ponds early in the summer season last year. We had a high survival of these rescued tadpoles and more frogs than could be sustained if returned to the collection site. It was a great opportunity to get some of these frogs out to neighboring meadows and ponds and boost those populations during this good water year!

National Carousel Day
In honor of National Carousel Day on Tuesday, July 25th, we recognize our intricately detailed, hand-carved, wooden carousel which remains one of the most beloved and iconic attractions at SF Zoo, as it has since it was installed here in 1925! Built in 1921 and over 100 years later, the historic Dentzel Carousel is a rare menagerie carousel, is one of only 14 in the world and among the last seven Dentzel Carousels remaining in the U.S. The Carousel features two chariots and 50 animals, each custom and individualized, embellished with whimsical details and bejeweled. By now, there must be at least five million revolutions and counting. Now named for Bay Area philanthropist Eugene Friend, stop by on your next visit! Happy National Carousel Day!
