March of the Penguins is This Weekend!

Join us on Saturday, July 29th to see our two new Magellanic penguin chicks walk and waddle their way to their permanent home on Penguin Island! The annual March of the Penguins begins promptly at 10:15 a.m. so you'll want to grab a spot on the Lion House side of penguin pool to see them. Every penguin is different and you never know if they'll scurry down the pathway or take their sweet time!
Come early to see our chicks make their way home!
* 9 a.m. - Special Guardian member entry time. Guardians receive private Guardians-only VIP viewing section and continental breakfast. Reservations required.
* 9:30 a.m. - Zoo Member entry time.
* 10 a.m. - General public entry time
* 10:15 a.m. - March begins on the Lion House side of Penguin Island

Name Our Male Penguin Chick!
All current SF Zoo Members and Guardians are invited to come to Sunset Fridays on Friday, July 28th and visit the Membership Booth located among our vendor booths to enter your name for consideration! Members and Guardians will also have the opportunity to submit a name at the March of the Penguins event on Saturday, July 29th.
Live Music, Food & Fun at Sunset Fridays
Join us for our weekly summer event, Sunset Fridays at SF Zoo! This Friday, July 28th, see our gorgeous Chilean flamingos out in their habitat, grab a seat on the lawn to listen to a live performance by Greg Dayton and the Big Cats. This week, Allied Entertainment will be on-site to promote the new blockbuster "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" with movie giveaways while supplies last! Wet your appetite with this week's delicious Chef's Special at our pop-up bar and tapas area, participate in conservation-themed kids activities and get your face painted! For your convenience, we recommend that you bring your own blanket or folding chairs.

The event takes place just after the Zoo closes, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Playfield area where kids can play at the Elinor Friend Playground, Sculpture Learning Plaza and ride the Dentzel Carousel. As a SF Zoo Member, admission is FREE! Bring Your Used Cell Phones to Save Gorillas in the Wild

On Monday, July 31st, you can help us celebrate our critically endangered Western lowland gorilla on the occasion of his 42nd birthday and help save gorilla species in the wild. Bring any of your used cell phones, smart phones, iPads, iPods, tablets, Apple watches, adapters and chargers, or MP3 players, to the Gorillas on the Line collection box located in Membership Concierge office in Entry Village that day and you will receive two free carousel passes per item donated. These items will be recycled through this program, benefiting gorillas in the wild. Then be sure to stop by and wish "Oscar Jonesy" a Happy Birthday!
Male Jaguar Named
Animal naming opportunities represent an important way for us to raise funds for the San Francisco Zoological Society's wildlife conservation programs and initiatives, providing needed support as a non-profit organization. Recently, with the arrival of our new male jaguar from the Sacramento Zoo, a generous donor and longtime Zoo supporter selected a distinguished Scandinavian name, "Lamont" as her choice, which also means "kind and handsome". In addition, the donor named our new female ocelot "Pepita," which is Italian for "unpolished gold nugget." We so appreciate the support! Please stop by to say hello to "Lamont" and "Pepita" in their habitats adjacent to the Lion House!
SF Zoo Named 2023 Best of the Best!

San Francisco Zoo & Gardens was named a winner in Bay Area Parent Magazine's Best of the Best for 2023! Voted by their readers and members of the public, SF Zoo was the top vote-getter for San Francisco in the "Best Zoos and Aquariums in the Bay Area (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3da7a41498&e=7683a9aed3) " category, receiving the "gold" medal this year. Bay Area Parent also inducted the Zoo into their Hall of Fame! Thank you for the wonderful honor!

Asian Elephant Awareness Month
Though SF Zoo has not housed elephants for nearly 20 years, their future is still top of mind for all of us here. August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month and with fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants left in the world, we join the Association of Zoo & Aquarium's SAFE (Saving Species From Extinction) program in helping to spread the word of the second largest land mammal and their continual challenge with habitat loss. In addition, by supporting conservation organizations that work to protect their wild ranges and manage human-elephant conflicts, Asian elephants may have a better chance of survival.
