Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Park Leaders Share Inspiration, Strategy in SF’s Public Spaces The India Basin Waterfront Park project teamed up with Washington DC’s 11th Street Bridge Park, the High Line Network and the Urban Institute to organize an engaging, future-focused policy lab conference in San Francisco this week. Washington DC's 11th Street Bridge Park is also the convener of a Five-City Workforce Pilot that met as a part of this conference, which includes India Basin Waterfront Park in San Francisco and parks in Grand Rapids, MI, Dallas, TX and Buffalo, NY. People from cities across the country exchanged ideas and explored the best approaches on how parks can deliver jobs, training, and economic opportunities to the neighborhoods they serve. India Basin Waterfront Park project partners were proud to share the recent graduation of community members from the project's specialty training program. The conference included panels and site visits to our city parks such as India Basin Shoreline Park, the EcoCenter in Heron's Head Park, and Golden Gate Park. As the host city, San Francisco's community and park leaders shared their personal stories and insights on workforce development with the national audience. The goal was to inspire fresh perspectives and innovative strategies that attendees could implement in their own communities. Participants shared knowledge, networked, and envisioned a future where all parks and public spaces are vibrant hubs for skill-building and community growth. Read more about this conference at the link below from the San Francisco Standard, which highlighted the India Basin Waterfront Park project after attending one of the conference's site visits. Swimming Pools   San Francisco Parks Host SFUSD High School Graduations We had a great time hosting San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) high school graduations at Kezar Stadium and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park last week. We were thrilled to have our parks be a part of the celebration of this milestone in the lives of these graduates. Congratulations and best of luck in your future endeavors!   Restoring the Mission Blue Butterfly on Twin Peaks The Mission blue butterfly is an endangered species that only exists in the Bay Area, with its healthiest population on San Bruno Mountain. Decades of work by Rec and Park's Natural Resources Division has helped restore the Mission blue butterfly to Twin Peaks, utilizing habitat enhancement and translocation of adult butterflies to create a healthy population in this park. The Mission blue butterfly's habitat consists of coastal prairie grasslands containing lupines, which are the butterfly's host plants. Rec and Park has worked to restore the primary host plant lupinus albifrons on Twin Peaks, as well as to augment alternative hosts such as lupinus formosus and lupinus variicolor as a safeguard in case of fungal outbreaks. Natural resources has extensively seeded all three lupine species in recent years with them thriving this year due to ample rains. To measure population size of the Mission blue butterfly at Twin Peaks, natural resources primarily uses data gathered in larval and egg surveys, which usually take place from March to June annually. This season we've performed two larval surveys and six egg surveys. Though we've had a slow start to the season, things were looking up with our most recent survey, with a total of 279 eggs and even a couple adults flying. Though a relatively low total count this late in the season, we suspect this is due to the unusual amounts of spring rain. We hope to see more Mission blue butterflies taking flight soon on Twin Peaks as we move into summer!     Gardens of Golden Gate Park Hiring Teen Garden Interns The Gardens of Golden Gate Park are looking for enthusiastic and motivated students to join their team as teen garden interns. He grew up in the city’s Lakeview/OMI neighborhood, where the beloved playground is informally known as Byxbee Park. Later, his own children became fans of Merced Heights. Today, Renard operates the year-round enrichment program Youth 1st from the clubhouse in the park’s upper terrace. His care for the park, however, extends to every corner of every level, from ensuring off-leash pooches stay in the new dog park to helping seniors use the new exercise equipment. As the main contact for a broad range of neighborhood park advocates, Renard seems to know every park-goer, from kids on the slide to athletes on the sport courts. On weekends, he often joins neighborhood elders cleaning up trash to ensure the park is safe and spotless for their grandchildren. “This community has embraced me and inspired me,” Renard says. “I’m always going to care about this park and providing access and opportunity.” People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks.   Upcoming Events Sundown Cinema Kicks Off 2023 Season at Alamo Square on June 8 Sundown Cinema is returning to San Francisco parks for its 2023 season from India Basin Shoreline Park to Alamo Square!
