ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
World Giraffe Day - the Longest Day of the Year!
World Giraffe Day takes place on June 21st each year and was established to bring awareness to the plight of giraffe species in the wild, and also to celebrate the tallest animal in the world with the longest neck on the longest day of the year! SF Zoo has been home to reticulated giraffe since 1958, and have housed other species in its history. Since that time, giraffe species and subspecies are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation due to human population growth and urbanization of giraffe habitat. Known as the "silent extinction," giraffe populations have declined 40% in just 30 years. What is being done to save giraffes from extinction? Conservation efforts such as reforesting areas with acacia trees, anti-poaching and hunting measures, sustainable agriculture, are some of the efforts underway. In addition, the need for education and outreach to communities about giraffes. On your next visit, say hello to our herd!

Newest Bird Arrivals!
Recently, we welcomed a pair of male black-faced ibises to the Puente al Sur outdoor aviary, a wonderful addition, as this South American ibis subspecies, ranging in southern and central Argentina and Chile, stands out with its golden or buff-colored head and neck, with a cinnamon colored crown and nape. It has blackish bill and brown to black plumage and red legs. There are about 29 species of ibis found worldwide, a medium-sized wading bird that feeds by wading through shallow waters. This species is of least concern according to the IUCN Red List.

Happening this Month!
Pollinator Week!
June 19-24 is national Pollinator Week! More than 20,000 species of insects, birds, bats, and other animals contribute to the pollination of wild plants and domestic crops. Climate change is leading to increased loss off many pollinators worldwide. National Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is an excellent place to see bees, beetles, and hummingbirds in action. Top spots are Gail’s Fragrance Garden, the Exploration Zone butterfly gardens, and Greenie’s Conservation Corner.
