We've Got Red, White and Now, Blue! Meet Our New Hyacinth Macaws!
Just in time for the Fourth of July, we've just introduced the newest - and largest - macaw species to the aviary adjacent to the California Conservation Corridor. You've seen our red colored green-winged macaws, now meet their new neighbors, a trio of beautiful blue female hyacinth macaws!

Native to central and eastern South America, these royal blue macaws are dazzling to see, with their beautiful eyes ringed with yellow, with yellow also found under their black beaks. Our three new unrelated females were recently transferred here from another accredited zoo, and they range in age from 5 to 21 years. This engaging species is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. While it is not illegal to own hyacinth macaws as pets, they do live up to 50 years or more and have very strong beaks (known to crack coconuts!). So far, they are busily exploring their new habitat and adjusting well! And the "white," of Red, White & Blue? Check out our white Bali mynahs at the South American Tropical Rainforest & Aviary and be sure to see our macaws over the long Fourth of July weekend!
Red-Bellied Lemur - Only One Left in U.S.

Our 32-year-old male red-bellied lemur, "Eno," is truly one of a kind...literally! Eno is now considered the only red-bellied lemur living in a North American zoo, and as such, he is a special ambassador of his species. He is also quite remarkable at this age, since the lifespan of red-bellied lemurs in their native Madagascar is just 15-20 years in the wild, and 20-25 years under human care. This species of prosimian is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN with threats mainly habitat loss and poaching. At his advanced age, you might not always see Eno out and about in the forest area of the Lipman Family Lemur Forest, but occasionally, you may see him in the enclosed lemur yard.
Fried Egg Poppy Garden Now in Full Bloom

On your next visit to the Youth Exploration Zone, look for the Romneya coulteri, also known as the "fried egg poppy" which thrives just beyond the entrance. This California native is a giant of the poppy family and can reach six to eight feet in height and is distinguished by huge white flowers with a bright yellow center, resembling fried eggs! The garden is a delight, with the multitude of flowers having recently bloomed! You might also detect a slight fragrance!
Happening in July!
Wild About Wildlife Month!
The theme this year for Wild About Wildlife Month is "Embrace Nature's Beauty," an appropriate message as nature has a way of inspiring us and reminding us of how important our planet is. This special month was established to raise awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and their native habitats. By celebrating this month, we deepen our appreciation of biodiversity, the variety of all earth's life forms. One of the most important ways to celebrate this month is to visit the Zoo and reconnect with wildlife! Whether you are gazing into the eyes of a Komodo dragon or looking at our plant life with a keener eye, there's much to see and observe. And here, we are a stopping place for many native and migratory bird species, including songbirds, sea birds and a variety of raptors. It's a great month to get out and explore!
