ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

March is Women’s History Month, but every day, we honor female conservationists like the women pictured here who diligently work to make San Francisco Zoo & Gardens what it is. Our Zoo workforce is led by a female CEO and proudly consists of nearly 70% individuals identifying as female. Each female team member here has a diverse set of interests and is committed to supporting our mission to connect, care and conserve. With mentors such as Jane Goodall, Sylvia Earle and the late Dian Fossey, these women strive to serve as inspirations and role models for our future generations! Bravo and thank you!

See Archimedes in the Youth Exploration Zone

Long-time SF Zoo resident, Archimedes, our 14-year-old great horned owl, recently moved to a quiet aviary in our Youth Exploration Zone. Great horned owls are large (with a four-foot wingspan!), fearsome, nocturnal hunters and one of the most common owls in North America. Their eyes are 35 times more sensitive than humans and can see objects with only 5% of the light that humans need. Extra vertebra in their necks (14 versus seven for humans) allow them to rotate their heads 270 degrees in search of prey. Help us protect this incredible species by not using rat poisons, which could result in the painful deaths of owls and other birds of prey who feed on mice and rats. See Archimedes soon!

From our gorgeous gardens to our red-eyed tree frog, there will be no pinching here. We look forward to welcoming you. Sláinte!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

We're excited to share that our new infant mandrill is a boy! You can now see the little one, born to mother, Lulu, and father, Big Joe, explore his new habitat with mom close by. If you don't see him at first, keep a close eye out for him as he spends a lot of time attached to mom's chest.
