Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Spring Fling Community Celebration at Crocker Amazon on April 22 The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's (RPD) seasonal party is coming to Crocker Amazon Playground (799 Moscow Street) on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us for Spring Fling and RPD Things, which will include live entertainment, games, activities, archery, rock climbing, arts and crafts and more. For more information and to register, click the link below. Spring Fling and RPD Things   Owl Rescue at the Golden Gate Bandshell We’re used to hootenannies at the bandshell, but nothing like this! In between responding to storm damage, our structural maintenance team assisted San Francisco Animal Care and Control (SFACC) rescue a great horned owl that got stuck in netting at the Golden Gate Bandshell last week. The owl is recovering with SFACC and we look forward to seeing it back in the park soon! A special thanks to our tree toppers, heavy equipment operators and electricians for their assistance. Watch video of the rescue here.   Illuminate Live at the Golden Gate Bandshell March 31, April 2 & 5 Happy Women's History Month! Join us for the free concert series, Illuminate Live, at the Golden Gate Bandshell, where all shows throughout March will feature women or women-fronted bands. This weekend's shows include Friday Happy Hour on March 31 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. with The Super Super. For Reggae Sunday on April 2 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., we have DJs Irie Dole and Guid8nce with special guests the Nice and Fresh crew. Next week, we have a special Market to Bandshell Singer/Songwriter Wednesday produced in association with Sunset Mercantile on April 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. featuring the Season of Us, Skinny Katz, and Jon and The Baptists. Golden Gate Bandshell   Community Members Begin India Basin Construction Training A second set of community members began training this week for construction jobs through a program sponsored by the India Basin Waterfront Park Project. This four-week training will prepare participants for union careers as carpenters, laborers, cement masons and other skills. Swinerton, the construction firm building the southern part of the park, has committed to hiring at least ten of the graduates on the India Basin Waterfront Park Project or other local projects. These free trainings are provided in partnership with the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and its CityBuild Academy. Participants receive a stipend and graduates receive work clothes, tools and funds to pay for union membership. This construction training is outlined in the India Basin Waterfront Park Project's Equitable Development Plan (EDP). The EDP serves as a blueprint for delivering a park designed by and for the community while improving economic opportunity and environmental health for its residents. India Basin Waterfront Park Project   Urban Ag Hosts Workshop for Educators at Alemany Farm Our Urban Agriculture team hosted a workshop for early childhood educators at Alemany Farm last weekend where attendees learned about soil building, growing plants from seeds, harvesting, pollinator friends and more. A special thanks to all of our participants and workshop partners who are helping to ensure kids are growing up with nature in San Francisco! SF Children & Nature   LoveDolores Now Hiring Public Outreach Ambassadors In collaboration with AmeriCorps and the California Student Conservation Association, Rec and Park is seeking two highly motivated individuals to serve as public outreach ambassadors with our LoveDolores and Coyote Coexistence campaigns. Ambassadors will work 20 hours per week on projects related to Leave No Trace, environmental conservation, waste reduction, wildlife research, and stewardship. Time will be split between working at our McLaren Lodge office and engaging with people in our parks. Through outreach and education, ambassadors will work to inspire stewardship among park visitors. Public Outreach Ambassador   Buchanan Street Mall Renovation Project Events on April 5 and 19 Join project partners for outreach events to gather community vision for the Buchanan Street Mall project. The first is a Memory Walk design conversation on Wednesday, April 5 at the African American Art and Culture Complex (762 Fulton Street) Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m. with conversation and activities from 6 to 8 p.m. and facilitated by En2Action, the National Healing Collective, and Atunse Justice League. When completed, the Memory Walk will weave through Buchanan Street Mall, showcasing local art and honoring community history. Can't make it in person? For more information about the project, click the link below. McLaren Park Vision Plan   Upcoming Events   Garden Resource Day on April 1 Join us for garden resource days this spring! The next will take place on Saturday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free compost, mulch, plant starts and seeds. Compost will be limited to two 5-gallon buckets per person – bring your own buckets. These events will take place at the overflow parking lot at Gleneagles Golf Course (2100 Sunnydale Avenue), adjacent to the McLaren Bike Park. A waiting line will form on the north side of the street. Please approach from east to take a right turn into the parking lot. Urban Agriculture   Mobile Rec in Bayview-Hunters Point April 1 and 8 Mobile Rec is coming to Bayview-Hunters Point this April. In addition to free BMX biking and skateboarding, our rock wall will be available for aspiring climbers to reach new height at Bayview/K.C. Jones Playground (3rd Street and Armstrong Avenue) on Saturday, April 1. The following Saturday, April 8, Mobile Rec will be at Hilltop Park (61 Whitney Young Circle) with free BMX biking, skateboarding and more. Mobile Rec   Rescheduled Entwined Closing Celebration on April 2 Join artist Charles Gadaken, the Box Shop and the San Francisco Parks Alliance for the rescheduled closing celebration for Entwined on Sunday, April 2 at Peacock Meadow (240 JFK Drive) to celebrate another year of Entwined bringing light, color, and joy to Golden Gate Park. Entwined Closing Celebration   Muriel Leff Mini Park Reopening on April 3 Join Rec and Park and the San Francisco Parks Alliance for the Muriel Leff Mini Park (420 7th Avenue) reopening celebration on Monday, April 3 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event will celebrate the completion of recent improvements and feature live music from the Bay Area Jazz Mobile and refreshments. Improvements to the park include new picnic tables, benches and nature exploration elements, while community volunteers added new plantings. Muriel Leff Reopening   Bug Day at the Randall Museum on April 8 The bugs are back LIVE at the Randall Museum (199 Museum Way) on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check out the incredible extravaganza of insects at the Randall’s free Bug Day event celebrating everything insect with hands-on science and art activities, games, live music, movies and more! In addition, the San Francisco Beekeepers Association will have a hive of live honeybees on display. Kids can watch beekeepers at work and learn about these amazing pollinators. Bug Day   Career Resource Fair at Civic Center Plaza on April 15 The City and County of San Francisco is hosting a career resource fair on Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Civic Center Plaza (355 McAllister Street). San Francisco Recreation and Parks, along with other government agencies will be present to provide guidance and resources on starting your career in San Francisco government! Career Resource Fair   Harvey Milk Photo Center: Our Mothers Ourselves Exhibit Opens April 15 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) for the opening reception of Our Mothers Ourselves - Legacies that Shape Us on Saturday, April 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. Curated by Ellen Konar and Adrienne Defendi, the exhibit features 10 artists who explore maternal legacies, sharing perspectives through photo-based images, constructed objects, and audio narratives. Each photographic series narrates a unique set of relationships and explores how certain individuals continue to shape the lives of those remaining. Our Mothers Ourselves   We Players: Adventures with Alice in Golden Gate Park Starting April 27 We Players is back in Golden Gate Park this spring with a whimsical and witty Wonderland and Looking-Glass mash-up entitled Adventures with Alice. The performances will take place Thursday to Sunday from April 27 through May 20 in Golden Gate Park, beginning at the stables and ending at the Portals of the Past. This free, non-competitive baseball and softball summer league is for ages 5 to 13 and features lessons on integrity, confidence, teamwork, leadership, and more. Jr. Giants   22 New Shop Stewards Sworn in by Mayor Breed at McLaren Lodge Last week, we hosted 22 new shop stewards from Rec and Park and San Francisco Public Works for a special swearing in by Mayor London Breed at McLaren Lodge. Our Video of the Week comes from Mayor Breed and interviews some of these stewards. The work of shop stewards is essential, as they are the people that support our laborers and help maintain our parks, keep our public spaces clean, and beautify our city. They are rank-and-file labor leaders with LiUNA! Local 261 that support workers and bring labor and management together.
