ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
May the 4th Be With You (and Endangered Species Everywhere!)
Star Wars fans worldwide celebrate each May 4th as May the Fourth Be With You, and this is a neat opportunity to highlight our many endangered species! The Mandalorian's gregarious sidekick "Grogu" was introduced to some of our animals this week for photos, which you can see on our social media channels. This included our giraffe, black rhino, koala, snow leopard and wolverine, plus a visit to the Elinor Friend Playground.
Ride our Carousel on May 5 to Benefit Rhinos
Each year, Keep the 5 Alive on 5/5, celebrated as Cinco de Rhino, is held to bring awareness and support of the five remaining rhino species on the fifth day of the fifth month. By riding our Dentzel Carousel on Friday, May 5th, we'll donate $1 from each ride to the International Rhino Foundation (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=94c1e9b7ed&e=7683a9aed3) , whose work helps save rhinos in the wild. At 2:30 p.m., be sure to stop by the Greater one-horned rhino habitat (across from Penguin Island) for a special keeper talk. Plus, you can visit our very own ambassadors "Boone" and "Gauhati" every day, our symbols of hope for rhino conservation!
Welcome New Ocelot!
Come see our newest resident now living in the habitat adjacent to the Lion House! We recently welcomed a female ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), a small and strikingly beautiful endangered feline species, who was rescued and has noticeably lost her tail. This charismatic species is native to Central & South America, and also found in southern Texas where the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Ocelot Species Survival Plan is working with conservation organizations to recover the species in their northern-most range. She is adjusting well to her new surroundings!

We celebrated the milestone 20th birthday of "Judy," our female Bornean orangutan on May 2nd as animal care staff presented her and her companion, "Berani," with bubble bath themed birthday enrichment, complete with bubble bath foam! She also enjoyed some of her favorite treats, such as a giant banana leaf, coconut water plus toys like scrub brushes and rubber duckies! Both Judy and Berani are important ambassadors of their critically endangered species.
