Meet our new Jaguar at Special Member's Morning!

For the first time in nearly 24 years, SF Zoo welcomes the arrival of a beautiful new male jaguar! While he acclimates to his new habitat, SF Zoo Members are invited to celebrate during a Member's Morning on Saturday, May 13 from 9-10 a.m. at the Lion House. At 125-lbs., he displays the distinctive dark "rosettes" or spots that help this species blend in with their environment. As the third largest cat species after lions and tigers, jaguars range in the coastal areas of Mexico, Central America and northern South America. They are considered near threatened, as their habitat continues to decrease. Not yet a member? Happy Mother's Day from our moms to you!
Visit SF Zoo this Mother's Day! In addition to our special Mother's Day morning Bikeabout (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=da3fff61db&e=7683a9aed3) , come see some of our amazing animal moms! See Lulu, mother to a new male offspring and two juvenile mandrills, and our multiple black-tailed prairie dog moms busily watching over 10 young pups!  Earlier this year, we welcomed Greater kudu calves, and they can be seen in our African Savanna. We also celebrate our many Magellanic penguins and the generations of penguins that make up our colony. A Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers everywhere!
It's Amphibian Week!

Amphibians, such as frogs, toads, salamanders and newts, live on both land and in the water and this week, we've been celebrating Amphibian Week, a special recognition week for all things amphibian!  One of our core conservation projects has been the restoration of California red-legged frogs, Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs and the Yosemite toad back to their native habitats. Amphibians play an important role in the ecosystem as they are major indicators of an ecosystem's heath, which has implications on humans. Be sure to follow our social media channels to see our daily posts and meet our conservation team!
Happy Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
May is Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month and this year's theme is "Stories of Determination." At the Zoo, we are fortunate to welcome a diverse audience to visit our animal residents that can be found around the world. Endangered Asian species that reside here, like the snow leopard, Greater one-horned rhino, Komodo dragon and Bornean orangutans, are important conservation ambassadors and we are honored to share their unique stories and importantly, their on-going challenges. When we talk about "Stories of Determination," these animals in particular are in need of our support and attention. We hope you will join us this month!
World Migratory Bird Day

On Saturday, May 13th, see herons, egrets, ducks, song birds, gulls, pelicans, hummingbirds and an occasional hawk at various places throughout the Zoo - no, they are not permanent residents but the Zoo is certainly a great stopping place for them during World Migratory Bird Day and all year long! This year, the theme is "Water: Sustaining Bird Life," focusing on the importance of water for migratory birds. With the Zoo's natural lakes and ponds, tall trees and densely planted areas, bird watching is really a "thing" at the Zoo! See what birds you can spot! (Photo by May Woon)

Exhilarating Zen at the Zoo

We recently hosted our first hour-long outdoor yoga session, which proved so popular that we added several more dates to the calendar! With 30 yogis practicing Vinyasa flow to the ambient sounds of an awakening zoo, and surrounded by savanna animals grazing around the African Savanna's Donga, we're pleased that participants had a great time. For those of you hoping to join in, our once-a-month classes are now full but keep a keen eye out in case we add more!
