ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Endangered Species Weekend Presentations

Join us on Saturday & Sunday, May 20 & 21 as we celebrate Endangered Species Weekend (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=d23b759d84&e=7683a9aed3) with a variety of fun and informative in-person programs taking place at Wildlife Theater from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We'll also be highlighting our endangered species with keeper talks, docent biofacts, and conservation status signs. Of our animal residents, 14 species are listed as "critically endangered", 17 are "endangered", and 20 are listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which are critical indicators of health of the world's biodiversity. Learn how to save these animals before they disappear. Our animals amaze, but conservation saves!
We enjoyed seeing the many Members who joined us for our Jaguar Members Morning last weekend! Our new male jaguar is adjusting well to his temporary habitat, and we wanted to share this amazing photo by Zoo Member Loralie Baum, who was in the right place at the right time to snap this gorgeous image! Stop by the Zoo and say hello to our newest big cat! Visit our Member page (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=4e80ab7205&e=7683a9aed3) to learn how you can become a Zoo Member!
Cleaning Up Ocean Beach

Join us for an exhilarating beach clean-up day on Thursday, June 8th - World Oceans Day! SF Zoo is one of the few zoological parks located right across from an ocean, and our unique tie to our coast gives us all the more reason to raise awareness of how ocean debris and plastic pollution affects marine life and ocean ecosystems. If you're interested in joining our Ocean Beach clean-up, email GuestServices at sfzoo.org (mailto:GuestServices at sfzoo.org) .

International Day for Biological Diversity

Biological Diversity - also known as "biodiversity" - is the variety and diversity of all life on earth, from animals, insects, plants, to fungi and microorganisms. Every organism and species plays a key role, working together to maintain balance and support life within their ecosystem. Monday, May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity, a day proclaimed by the United Nations to recognize and celebrate the Earth's biodiversity, and also to bring awareness to the decline of biodiversity throughout the world, mainly due to human activities, such as land use changes, pollution and climate change. At SF Zoo, we highlight through our animals, biodiversity hotspots, areas that are threatened by human habitation. We hope you'll take a moment to better understand the importance of biodiversity on this special awareness day.

Little Puffer Celebrated on National Train Day

Little Puffer, our historic miniature steam train, has quite a backstory! Recently, with National Train Day on May 13th, we took the opportunity to remind the public how far this little train has come in its 118 years of existence with a fun, little historical video (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=6b481510e8&e=7683a9aed3) that we posted on social media. Most of its lifetime was spent at SF Zoo, having been originally installed here in 1925. There were a number of close calls over the years, from transporting passengers along the Santa Cruz Boardwalk in 1907, being scorched in a warehouse fire in 1916 to being retired in 1978 and brought back shiny and new in 1998 through a generous grant from Richard and Rhoda Goldman. Little Puffer is truly "the engine that could!" With memories of your own, come back soon for another ride!
