ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Rare Przewalski's Horses Arrive
One of the most remarkable comeback stories is that of Przewalski's horse (pronounced SHUL-VAAL-SKEE), a critically endangered wild horse species native to Mongolia which 54 years ago was listed as extinct in the wild. Today, this rare equine's population has made a significant recovery, thanks to coordinated captive breeding and conservation efforts by accredited zoos and global organizations, and the successful reintroduction of the species to national parks in Mongolia and China.

Now, for the first time in SF Zoo's long history, we are proud to welcome a pair of Przewalski's horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) and share the story of this ancient species, known as the last truly wild horse, as they have never been domesticated. In the Mongolian language, they are called "takhi," which means spirit as they are much revered, and also known as the Mongolian wild horse. Come see our two new females - a 17-year-old and a 22-year-old, recently transferred here from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. At this time, they will reside in the stable and field in the area known as the Asian conservation zone on the south side of the Zoo.

Following the success of our first free Members event, Drinks, Bites & Zoo Insights, we are pleased to announce the date of our next exclusive adults-only (18 and over) program. On Saturday, December 16 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., you can register to enjoy hors d'oeuvres and adult beverages as guest speaker, Debbie Marrin, our Director of Training and Behavioral Husbandry, presents, "A Closer Look at Animal Enrichment and Training Programs." As a veteran of SF Zoo for 14 years of her 48 year animal care career, Debbie's experience is admirable! Her presentation will showcase images of our animals enjoying their enrichment as Debbie describes what goes into keeping our animals enriched, and how we teach our animals new behaviors, such as holding still for a vaccination, or getting on a scale to be weighed. Guests will also learn about zoo philosophies and ethics related to our enrichment and training programs.

The event, which takes place at the Osher Great Hall is open to registered SF Zoo Members only (sorry, guests are not permitted). Space is limited. To reserve your spot, email membership at sfzoo.org. (mailto:membership at sfzoo.org)
Where are the Grizzly Bears? Nature Calls

Grizzly bear siblings "Kachina" & "Kiona" have been “beary” busy – digging out piles of dirt to construct their dens. Their most recent den-digging project was nearly 12 feet in length, as the two sisters worked in tandem to get the job done! Grizzly dens in the wild are made up of an entrance, tunnel and chamber, where bedding material is placed. This is all in anticipation of entering a state of “torpor” – a mild form of hibernation that is clearly starting, as the girls are mostly groggy these days and fattened up for their upcoming state of inactivity.

In case you are looking for them, the bears will not den in outdoor Grizzly Gulch. They will instead den in the night quarters of the adjacent bear grotto, so all this digging allows them to expend what is left of their energy!
HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
Native American Heritage Month

The month of November celebrates National Native American Heritage Month, recognizing the significant contributions of the first Americans in the foundation and shaping of this country and honors the cultural and long-standing traditions of the Tribal Nations. San Francisco was the ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone people who called this area "Yelamu" and who were the area's original inhabitants. To learn more about their history, visit the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) web site (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=b049b6a6cb&e=7683a9aed3) . SF Zoo works in tandem with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department on the care and management of the beautiful bison in Golden Gate Park. Native Americans have revered bison, also called buffalo, for centuries, and the bison's recovery after being close to extinction in the 19th century greatly affected populations of Native Americans. This Saturday, November 4th is National Bison Day, the national mammal of the
U.S., as we celebrate both observations and their shared history.
