Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Mayor Breed & City Leaders Celebrate Reopening of UN Plaza Mayor London Breed, Rec and Park, and community members today unveiled a transformed UN Plaza, which will now serve as a dynamic hub for recreation and scheduled activities in the Civic Center neighborhood. The revitalized space includes the nation’s first street skating plaza of its kind, a fitness court studio, activities, and games. The all-day celebration included skateboard demonstrations, teqball lessons, chess lessons, ping pong, foosball, nature play activities, a climbing wall and activities hosted by the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco Public Library, and the Randall Museum. The United Nations Plaza, or UN Plaza, along with neighboring Fulton and Civic Center Plazas, will host programming seven days a week, including dance, yoga, and roller-skating classes for all ages. Additionally, the space will continue to be home to the Heart of the City Farmer’s Market and Fulton Plaza Gift Gallery. A fall and winter schedule can be found at this link. The $2 million renovation by Rec and Park is part of a larger effort by city, state and federal partners, the Civic Center Community Benefit District, nonprofit organizations, law enforcement, and neighboring cultural institutions to transform the Civic Center area into a clean, safe, and vibrant public space for everyone. Its revitalization as a destination for City residents aligns with goals laid out in the Mayor’s Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future. The 13,000-square-foot skating plaza, designed by local professional skateboarders and skate park advocates, is filled with elements from iconic skate spots around the City, most of which no longer exist. Its centerpiece, a skateable pyramid, is nod to Place de la République in Paris, a large multi-use pedestrian plaza that incorporates street skating. While several cities in Europe have designed public spaces for pedestrians and skateboarders, San Francisco is now the only U.S. city to adopt a design at this scale that thoughtfully integrates both groups. In addition to the skating area and tables for ping-pong, teqball, chess, foosball and cornhole, UN Plaza now includes an outdoor fitness studio with strength-building stations and an outdoor class space for tai chi, yoga, HIIT, Zumba, and other group exercise for all fitness levels. Additional elements include new plants, trees, café seating, and Tivoli lights. For more information, click the link below. UN Plaza Reopens   Mayor Breed & Chef Tyler Florence Welcome New Cafes to Union Square Mayor London Breed yesterday joined Tyler Florence, City leaders and community members to celebrate the opening of the renowned Chef’s new café concepts. Miller & Lux Provisions, two new artisanal cafes now located in Union Square Plaza, offer residents, visitors, and workers a unique dining experience in one of Downtown San Francisco’s most recognizable locations. The new cafés are part of Florence’s restaurant group, The Greater Organization, and aim to offer a “picnic in the park” experience in the plaza. The cafes offer daily indoor and outdoor dining and are operating under a three-year lease with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, which oversees Union Square Plaza. The agreement was approved by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission in September. The café on the Stockton Street side of Union Square offers an all-day brunch menu, including savory dishes like organic rotisserie chicken and vegetable-filled side-dishes, while the café on the Powell Street side features barista-crafted coffee and fresh pastries such as croissants and pain au chocolat from chef Karla Marro, who has led the pastry program at Michelin starred restaurants including Acquerello in San Francisco and Daniel in New York. The Patisserie will offer breakfast service starting daily at 7:30 a.m. and the rotisserie café will open at 11:30 a.m. daily. Florence is best known for his appearances on The Food Network over the last 27 years. Locally, he’s known for running three successful restaurants: Miller and Lux at Chase Center, Wayfare Tavern in Financial District, and Tyler Florence’s Fresh at San Francisco International Airport. The cafes advance Mayor Breed’s Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future, a comprehensive plan to reinvigorate Downtown and solidify San Francisco’s reputation as a thriving global destination. The plan calls for increased attractions and activities in public spaces like Union Square that boost foot traffic and support area businesses along with a host of other initiatives. The new establishments opened their doors in time for Union Square’s busy holiday season, which includes the arrival of the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink and the traditional Macy’s Great Tree.
