ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Welcome New Baird's Tapir
Head over to our Puente al Sur (Bridge to the South) multi-species habitat area to see our new Baird's tapir, the national animal of Belize and nicknamed "mountain cow." The Baird's tapir is an endangered species and the largest land mammal in the Americas, where they are found in wetlands and forests from Mexico to the southern tip of South America. As the largest of the four species of tapirs, they are an odd-toed ungulate, similar to horses and rhinos. When born, the calf has special camouflage colorings and stripes that many call a "watermelon on legs" - at two-years-old, this young male still has his watermelon stripes on his lower legs, see if you can spot them!

As the first such species born at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, LA, his transfer here was recommended by the AZA's Species Survival Plan where he will serve here as an important ambassador of this species whose populations are threatened by habitat loss and destruction and hunting. Baird's tapirs use their prehensile nose when foraging; they also love to swim. Come see our new male on your next visit!

HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
Orangutan Caring Week

Habitat loss continues to be the main reason orangutans are endangered, as their tropical rainforest homes continue to disappear at a staggering rate due to the human activities such as illegal logging, palm oil plantations, mining and forest clearing for agriculture. Orangutan Caring Week, is November 12-18, and is an opportunity to show how much you care about orangutans by taking action to protect and save the three species of orangutans and the rainforest in which they live. This special week was started in 2005 as a way to focus collectively on their plight and highlight the many orangutan organizations to support. There is a dedicated web site Orangutan Caring Week (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=6af9eb06d4&e=7683a9aed3) which lists what you can do to help save orangutans, whether it is raising awareness through social media, learning about the palm oil crisis or even raising funds, what you can do can make a difference. Come see our pair, "Judy" and "Berani" at the Great Ape Passage. (Photo by
