ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Introducing Our New Wolverine Kit!

With its bushy tail, thick, dark fur with pale stripes down the sides and rump, there's no mistaking a wolverine! Meet our newest Zoo resident, a 9 1/2-month-old male wolverine, born at ZooMontana, who arrived just recently. As the largest members of the Mustelid or weasel family, wolverines are found in boreal forests, taiga, alpine and tundra habitats of northern Europe and Asia, Canada, and in the U.S., they are limited to Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Oregon.
You probably heard of the sighting this year of a wolverine in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, an amazing discovery, since they've been extinct from California since the 1920s! You'll be able to see our new male at the wolverine habitat located next to Komodo Crossing after he completes a mandatory 30 day quarantine period. You can also see our newest residents settling in to their new homes - a two-year-old male Baird's tapir at Puente al Sur and two critically endangered Przewalski's horses, adjacent to the Chacoan peccary habitat if you visit during the Thanksgiving holiday!

Become a Docent - Openings Now!
Enjoy the outdoors, get your steps in and make a difference by becoming a Zoo Docent! These knowledgeable individuals are among our greatest assets as they share information about wildlife, wild places and fun facts about our animal residents. For those of you interested in volunteering as a Zoo Docent, we are hosting a Docent Program Informational Event on Sunday, December 3 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Lurie Education Building.

The program includes a detailed presentation about the docent program followed by a complimentary Zoo tour and a hands-on demonstration on the use of our biofact cart (biological artifacts like skulls, bones and feathers). Enjoy light refreshments while connecting with others who share your passion for animals and our planet! Limited space is available. RSVP to docent at sfzoo.org (mailto:docent at sfzoo.org) .

Keeping animals stimulated and engaged is a top priority for animals under human care, whether it is creating diverse ways for them to forage, adding scents and smells to their habitat, or presenting indestructible "toys" for them to play and interact with. In our next Drinks, Bites & Zoo Insights, you'll meet Debbie Marrin, our Director of Training and Behavioral Husbandry, with 48 years of animal care experience, including her last 14 spent here, at SF Zoo!

Registration is now open for our upcoming exclusive adults-only (18 and over) program which takes place on Saturday, December 16 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and enjoy hors d'oeuvres and adult beverages as our guest speaker presents, "A Closer Look at Animal Enrichment and Training Programs." Her presentation will showcase images of our animals enjoying their enrichment as Debbie describes what goes into keeping our animals enriched, and how we teach our animals new behaviors, such as holding still for a vaccination, or getting on a scale to be weighed. Guests will also learn about zoo philosophies and ethics related to our enrichment and training programs.

The event, which takes place at the Bernard Osher Foundation Great Hall, is open to registered SF Zoo Members only (sorry, guests are not permitted). Space is limited. To reserve your spot, email membership at sfzoo.org. (mailto:membership at sfzoo.org)
HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
International Jaguar Day
https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=36e0034b47&e=7683a9aed3
As the largest wild cat in the Americas and the only big cat in Latin America, jaguars (Panthera onca) serve as an important keystone species for biodiversity conservation, and though a resilient species, there is a growing illegal trade in jaguars, especially jaguar body parts, that have severely impacted wild jaguar populations, mostly international trafficking to China. Today, 50% of this species' original territory and populations have declined, in its natural habitat range, from Mexico to Argentina. Jaguars are listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, and are now extinct in El Salvador and Uruguay.

On November 29th, we celebrate International Jaguar Day to recognize the importance this species plays in maintaining forests, biodiversity and local communities, especially culturally and ecologically. Visit International Jaguar Day (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=2cf126f4ab&e=7683a9aed3) to learn about jaguars and the ambitious global plan to protect and save them, plus see our male, "Lamont" who serves as an incredible jaguar ambassador!
