Dear Friends of SF Zoo & Gardens,

On this Thanksgiving, I am humbled by the efforts of our staff, members and volunteers to  connect our visitors with the conservation stories of the critically endangered species that reside here, including our Western lowland gorilla, blue-eyed black lemur, Bornean orangutan and black rhinoceros. Though so many animal species in every corner of the world are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, climate change and other human activities, their status can change just like that, making their overall existence a precarious one. By highlighting our most vulnerable species in the wild and making them top of mind, their plights and the need to save them become all the more crucial.

In 2024, you will see this statement more and more at SF Zoo & Gardens:  "Animals Amaze, Conservation Saves," a simple, yet powerful statement that sums up what we are about, and what we hope will be your takeaway, our Members and friends. This allows us to share stories of hope, from the return of the Przewalski's horse, Mexican gray wolf and American bald eagle from near extinction to stories of rescue and partnership like our grizzly bears and the Australia koala.
