ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Come Celebrate Barbro's 15th Birthday!
Turning 15 is a big deal - especially for a giraffe! Female reticulated giraffe "Barbro" turned 15 on October 3rd, but we are hosting a mini-birthday celebration for her this Saturday, October 7 at 10 a.m. at Acacia Plaza, in the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna and you're invited to join us!
Although giraffes do not have matriarchs, Barbro is the mother of two of our giraffes, "Ingrid" and "Sarah," and is often referred to as the "mother of the herd". Barbro's personality is gentle and inquisitive. Barbro loves to participate in training and has successfully and routinely participated in many complex husbandry behaviors. She is trained to participate in voluntary hoof trims, foot X-rays, injections, eye and ear exams, physical therapy exercises and even chiropractic adjustments. For special events, she will often be one of the giraffes to come say hello! Her favorite foods include pumpkins and Christmas trees so it's safe to say that the holidays are her favorite time of year! To spot our birthday girl, look for the giraffe with the big butterfly pattern across her chest and the fluffiest ossicones of the herd!

Visit the Hay Maze this Weekend!
Fall is here, so come out this weekend to experience the biggest hay maze in the City! Navigate the winding Harvest Hallow Hay Maze and find the fun animal facts along the way! You'll find a giant hay pit where you can jump right in, and for the little ones, we've got a maze that's just the right size for you to try out! Open daily through mid-November and located across from the Pachyderm Building by Great Ape Passage.

HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
World Rainforest Week
Each year in June, we celebrate World Rainforest Day, and in October, a special week is dedicated to rainforests for World Rainforest Week. We often talk about the importance of protecting and saving rainforests, and even though rainforests are home to over 50% of all known species of all living organisms, rainforests are necessary as they help stabilize the world's climate, providing clean air and filtering and regulating the flow of water. One critically endangered species you can find here is the Panamanian golden frog, a species of toad native to Panama and known as Panama's national animal. This species is believed to be extinct in the wild due to the deadly chytrid fungus, which has killed off populations in Panama and isolated regions as well. Approximately 1,500 of these frogs remain, mostly found in zoos where they can reproduce, but the overall population has declined more than 80% over a 10-year period due to the fungus, but also habitat loss and the pet trade.
