HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
World Migratory Bird Day
World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated twice a year, in the Spring and in the Fall, on October 14th. On your visits to the Zoo, you may see many wild birds at a stopover here, hanging out at our upper and lower lake areas, even Penguin Island! This year's theme is Water: Sustaining Bird Life, which focuses on the importance of water to migratory birds, whether it is a wetlands habitat, river, stream, pond, marsh or ocean. These water sources allow the migratory birds to feed, drink and nest and refuel. Every year, bird watchers participate in our annual bird count to keep track of bird species visiting the Zoo, noting those that may be winter residents or sometimes seen infrequently. Roughly half of the world's bird species migrate, an estimated 3.5 billion birds, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, back into the U.S. from their southern wintering grounds, about 20-40% of the approximate 10,600 known bird species. National Wolf Awareness Week
The third week of October marks National Wolf Awareness Week, and one of the most remarkable conservation stories is that of the on-going recovery of the Mexican gray wolf, a subspecies of the gray wolf, which was on the brink of extinction in the 1970's before intervention by conservationists and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

SF Zoo works in partnership to house non-releasable individuals, such as our four female siblings. Currently, from near extinction to today nearly 240 wild Mexican gray wolves live in the U.S. and approximately 45 in Mexico, with 380 in captive breeding programs, the road to a successful recovery remains slow, but steady for the most endangered wolf subspecies in the world. Wolf Awareness Week is an important time to learn about wolves and their importance as a keystone species playing an important role in their ecosystem.
