ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
World Lemur Day
Pictured is one of our blue-eyed black lemurs, among the most critically endangered of the 107 known species of lemurs, prosimians found only on the biodiverse island of Madagascar. On October 27, we celebrate all lemurs on World Lemur Day, the most threatened group of mammals on earth. Their fragile populations continue to decline due to rapid destruction of their habitat, as their forest homes are cleared by humans for agricultural purposes and logging. Lemurs are also threatened by illegal hunting and collection for the pet trade. Lemurs serve as vital forest dwellers, as seed dispersers and pollinators, yet according to the IUCN, 98% of lemurs face extinction over the next 20 years. What can you do to save lemurs? There are conservation organizations you can support who work with the local community, including the Lemur Conservation Network. different lemur species in our Lipman Family Lemur Forest, one of the largest mixed species habitats for lemurs in North America.

Your Candy Choices Make a Difference!

Follow this handy orangutan-friendly guide to purchasing Halloween candy highlighting products that use sustainable palm oil. The wild populations of critically endangered species like Bornean and Sumatran orangutans, and other endangered species that live in tropical rainforests, are declining rapidly due to habitat loss and deforestation caused by the destruction of their homes for palm oil, used in many products. Sustainable palm oil is produced with the lowest environmental impact possible, minimizing impact to wildlife and the local communities.
Check out the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo web page (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=9b4d12b286&e=7683a9aed3) for more orangutan-friendly products and brands, and also check the labels - products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) trademark shows it contains a minimum of 95% of certified sustainable palm oil. Choose wisely and save wildlife!
First 5 California's Stronger Starts Campaign

The campaign helps parents and caregivers learn about what toxic stress is; the physiological, psychological, and socio-economic effects on children; and how ACEs can lead to its development. HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
America's Recycles Day

A green planet is truly in our reach, but it takes all of us together to make a difference. On November 15th, America Recycles Day is an opportunity to assess your recycling habits, make new ones and better understand your impact to the environment. Only 35% of people actually recycle their plastics, paper, bottles, cans, aluminum and metal, and less than 10% of plastic products gets recycled. Considering the amount of plastic that pollutes our oceans and affects marine life, it is vital that recycling becomes a daily routine. Most of the plastic debris that finds its way into our oceans is through littering, killing thousands of marine life each year through ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. Just a few changes you can make to help our planet is to purchase products made with recycled content, recycle any and all recyclable materials, and use reusable bottles and shopping bags! These small steps go a long way!
In recognition of America Recycles Day, we are offering a Free Day to San Francisco residents with valid ID or utility bill with your address on Wednesday, Nov. 15th!
