Threatened Species Day

Species considered threatened with extinction in the near future are those listed in three categories, vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered. While somber to think that so many animal and plant species will go extinct in our life time, there is hope for some species, thanks to conservation, education and awareness efforts to protect and save vulnerable species.
National Threatened Species Day on September 7 is a reminder to step back and better understand the importance of these species to maintain a healthy environment to allow us to thrive, as each species plays an important role in their respective ecosystems. Of the animal species we care for here, 14 are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. One such species is the Bali myna (Leucopsar rothschild), one of the world's rarest birds. Currently there are less than 50 left in the wild. As the National Bird of Bali, they face insurmountable threats, due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade in Indonesia. Life Inside the Iconic Baobab Tree

Last week we opened a portion of the new Lipman Family Madagascar Center to the public. This included a walk-in replica of Madagascar's iconic Baobab tree, of which just six of the seven species of Baobabs are found only on Madagascar and one species, the Perrier's baobab was declared critically endangered on the IUNC Red List due to gold mining, climate change and agricultural land burning. Often it's not just animal species that are threatened with extinction.

By entering the Baobab tree from the elevated boardwalk, you'll find five habitats featuring some of the world's most fascinating invertebrate species! The species include: ghost mantids, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, tropical wood cockroaches, giant tropical millipedes and giant orbweaver spider. Come check them out!
Inspiring Mosaic Mural Honors Giraffe Conservation
You may have seen the new exciting art installation located within the tunnel leading to the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna. This nearly 30-foot-long, intricately tiled, mosaic mural depicts a collage of animals of the savanna, in homage to "Floyd," the late patriarch of the Zoo's reticulated giraffes and to honor the Zoo's support of giraffe conservation. The mural, using a kaleidoscope of thousands of small Murano glass tiles, plays off the light of day, according to San Francisco artist, Henry Jackson, who conceived, designed and fabricated the art piece, commissioned by the Dovey Family and SF Zoo. The 22 animals depicted include giraffes, Grant's zebras, Greater kudu, ostriches and African crowned cranes. Jackson sourced exact images of the animals from local photographer, Marianne Hale, who worked closely with Jackson to provide images taken here over a 10-year span. The art piece also showcases environments made up of actual locations from known savannas in Africa, even the grass
