ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Guess the Rhinos' Weights in Honor of World Rhino Day
In honor of World Rhino Day on September 22, you can guess the weights of each of our endangered rhino species, Greater one-horned rhino, "Gauhati," and black rhino "Boone" and win a chance to meet Gauhati up close and personal! A few months ago, we acquired our first high capacity scale, big enough to weigh our pachyderms. Having a weight on any animal is imperative to the animal's health and well-being, as diets are based on an animal's weight and it's important to know how much medication is required when being treated.
Getting a weight on a rhino is no small task! Our pachyderm team conducted conditioning and training sessions based on positive reinforcement just to get each to step on a mat, then finally the actual scale. Months later, the staff were able to weigh both Gauhati and Boone successfully.
On Friday, September 22, check the Zoo's Facebook page for a post that will include an opportunity to support the International Rhino Foundation, who is working to protect and save the remaining five species of rhinoceroses in the wild. You must be at least 8 years old to enter. The contest will run through the end of September.
THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND!
Special Endangered Species Keeper Talks Saturday & Sunday
Harvest Hallow Hay Maze Officially Opens!
Join us this weekend for special keeper talks that highlight some of the 14 critically endangered species that reside here and where much of our conservation focus is placed. Critically endangered species are those listed on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, and are those, quite literally, on the brink of extinction due to on-going threats to their survival. Each talk will run 15 minutes and you are welcome to ask questions about each species.
Saturday, September 23
1 p.m. - Black rhino, across from Cat Kingdom
2;30 p.m. - Western lowland gorillas, Jones Family Gorilla Preserve
Sunday, September 24
1 p.m. - Black rhino, across from Cat Kingdom
2;30 p.m. - Bornean orangutan, Great Ape Passage Extension
The biggest hay maze in San Francisco is back! This weekend, come on out to the Harvest Hallow Hay Maze and navigate your way around stacked hay bales, a few dead ends and find the giant hay pit (and feel free to jump in!). You'll also find 10 fun animal facts as you make your way around the maze. Plus, there is also a toddler-size hay maze adjacent to the big one! Starting this weekend, the hay maze will be open daily through mid-November.
Back by Popular Demand - BikeAbout!
We've received quite a few requests to add another BikeAbout program to our event schedule and we're happy to announce the new date of Saturday, October 14th for those of you who wish to sign up! This 60-minute guided bicycle tour is open to families and takes place before the zoo opens. General admission is included in the tour price and participants must bring their own wheels. Discounted tickets are available to Zoo Members. Purchase tickets here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=29592e6eca&e=7683a9aed3) under Special Programs.
Register to Fundraise in Support of Susan G. Komen
Join us in the fight against breast cancer by registering to fundraise for the MORE THAN PINK Walk at komen.org/sanfranciscowalk (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=27e1a6e264&e=7683a9aed3) . On October 1st, the Bay Area will unite at SF Zoo to walk towards a world without breast cancer. By participating in the walk, you will play a crucial role in raising essential funds and awareness to advance Komen's mission. Komen adopts a comprehensive 360-degree approach to combatting this disease, advocating for patients, driving research breakthroughs, enhancing access to high-quality care, and providing direct patient support.
The event day will start with a morning festival from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a moving closing ceremony that honors breast cancer survivors, remembers those we've lost too soon, and acknowledges top fundraisers. Following the closing ceremony, we invite Survivors and MBC Thrivers to join us on a special carousel ride with a guest of their choice, creating a special moment for our guests of honor. After the carousel ride, we encourage everyone to explore the zoo at their own pace and achieve their 6,000 steps goal. We hope you'll be a part of this day with us!"
HAPPENING THIS MONTH!
World Gorilla Day is September 24th
The Sixth Annual World Gorilla Day is September 24th and is an opportunity for people around the world to celebrate gorillas and take action to protect them in the wild. According to AZA Gorilla SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction), which focuses on the collective expertise of AZA-accredited zoos, like ours, to bring awareness to the plight of critically endangered gorilla species, only pockets of populations still exist in some areas of equatorial Africa, making their survival tenuous. They are threatened by illegal poaching, civil unrest, disease and habitat destruction due to extractive industries such as mining. The Gorillas on the Line (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3a1c96671b&e=7683a9aed3) program that SF Zoo supports, is one way you can help through the recycling of cell phones and electronic devices. The date, September 24th, commemorates the date in 1967 on which Dian Fossey established Karisoke Research Center. Western lowland gorillas are one of the Zoo's 14 critically endangered

Honoring our Community and Beyond
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs September 15 thru October 15, we wanted to acknowledge the many significant contributions made in the U.S. by Hispanic and Latino people both culturally and historically, and to celebrate the rich diversity in our communities. From a zoo perspective, zoos have a way of reaching beyond culture to instill an appreciation of wildlife from a young age, especially those found right in our own backyards. Critically endangered species, like the Mexican gray wolf found at our Wolf Canyon habitat, represent among those fragile species whose recovery from extinction was a partnership between the U.S. and Mexico. Come see our wolf siblings and species from South and Central America on your next visit!
