Ape Awareness Month
April is Ape Awareness Month, an important month to spread the word about gorilla conservation. Gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and over the last 20 – 25 years gorilla numbers have declined by more than 60%. Their small, scattered populations are threatened by increasing human development that causes direct predation and habitat loss. You can find our gorillas Oscar, Bawang, Monifa, and Kimani at the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve, a naturalistic exhibit featuring climbing rocks, tall trees and grass at the SF Zoo.

We recently had to say goodbye to our long-time resident Green Anaconda, "Oliver."
Oliver was estimated to have hatched in 1984 and was one of the longest-living snakes under human care. While females grow considerably larger, Oliver still was an impressive animal at 15 feet and 110 pounds. He was an incredible ambassador of his species to thousands of Zoo visitors over his decades here and was beloved by multiple generations of staff and guests. Oliver will be remembered for his mild demeanor and will be greatly missed by everyone at SF Zoo & Gardens.
Celebrate Earth Day
Celebrate Earth Day weekend by diving deep into our conservation projects and meeting our network of partners who make the world a more sustainable place. Find out what you can do at home, at work, and in your community to make a difference. There will be live entertainment, crafts for the kids, and learning opportunities for all ages! EarthFest activities are included when you purchase admission tickets to the Zoo, or show your SF Zoo membership card.
