Vote for Golden Gate Park SF Receives Federal Funding for Buchanan Street Mall Project Mayor London Breed announced last week that San Francisco has received an $8.1 million federal grant that will be dedicated to the renovation of the Buchanan Street Mall Project in the Western Addition neighborhood. The funding will allow for the addition of many amenities including a performance stage and seating areas, a picnic and barbecue area, multiple playgrounds, an adult exercise area, and a sports court. U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, announced the funding last week as part of $58.3 million in new investments to create public parks, expand recreation opportunities and restore outdoor ecosystems in 11 states. The new funding from the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program (ORLP) will increase equitable outdoors access for underserved communities. Buchanan Street Mall stretches five consecutive blocks between Eddy and Grove streets in the Western Addition. The federal grant will cover three of those blocks, while the other two blocks are supported by a $3.9 million ORLP grant that was awarded in 2022. Construction on the project is anticipated to begin this fall. The vision for the Buchanan Street Mall Project, developed in an ongoing partnership with the community since 2014, is to create a vibrant, safe, and equitable gathering space that encourages interaction between people of all ages. The project’s design also includes a flexible open plaza, a community garden, expansive lawns for relaxation, and a Memory Walk that incorporates art and interpretive elements to tell the stories of the neighborhood once known as the Harlem of the West. The project is a partnership between Rec and Park, Citizen Film, Green Streets, Trust for Public Land, the Exploratorium’s Studio for Public Spaces, Success Centers, the African American Art and Culture Complex, and the San Francisco Parks Alliance. Thank you to everyone who came out, as well as to our staff, volunteers, community partners and entertainers who made this event possible! A Sweet Bunny Tale: Park Rangers Brighten a Young Child's Day In the spirit of Easter, we’re egg-cited to share a hoppy bunny tail from our Park Rangers! A father recently reached out to our rangers in hopes they recovered his 3-year old daughter's beloved plush bunny, which went missing during the Hot Chocolate Run in Golden Gate Park back in January. While the bunny in question remains missing, our rangers asked the dad for permission to send a new bunny friend in hopes of lifting the young park-goer’s spirits. But first, rangers took the bunny on a few adventures in our parks, documenting its journey in pictures as a part of the little girl’s gift package. Needless to say, the daughter loved both her new bunny and the photo story of its wild adventures. A special thanks to our Park Rangers, who not only ensure the safety of park visitors, but also serve as ambassadors to help create positive park experiences. San Francisco Crowned America's Healthiest City San Francisco was recently crowned America's Healthiest City in a recent study by WalletHub. One of the big reasons for this is that San Francisco surpasses other major U.S. cities in per capita spending on parks and recreation, promoting accessible natural spaces and encouraging physical activity. Padel, frequently described as a cross between tennis and squash, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
