Celebrate Earth Day
Celebrate Earth Day weekend by diving deep into our conservation projects and meeting our network of partners who make the world a more sustainable place. Find out what you can do at home, at work, and in your community to make a difference. There will be live entertainment, crafts for the kids, and learning opportunities for all ages! EarthFest activities are included when you purchase admission tickets to the Zoo, or show your SF Zoo membership card.
Ape Awareness Month
Ape Awareness Month continues, and today we focus on the Bornean Orangutan, a species listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.

Orangutans are threatened by habitat degradation and they can become increasingly isolated in smaller and smaller patches of forest as palm oil plantations replace forest habitat. They are also threatened by the pet trade. The only predator of adult orangutans is humans.

Come see our orangutans Berani and Judy at the Great Ape Passage and learn more about their status in the wild.

Gorillas on the Line
Earth Day is this month, and we are drawing attention to the impact electronic waste has on the environment. Every year millions of electronic devices are disposed of improperly, which is a threat to the environment and human health.

The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is helping the community dispose of certain types of e-waste through the Gorillas On The Line program, which recycles old electronic devices, with a portion of the funds generated through the recycling of these devices going to AZA’s Gorilla SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction).

365 days a year you can donate your used cell phones, smart phones, iPads, iPods, tablets, Apple watches, adapters and chargers, MP3 players, handheld gaming devices and headphones in the specially designated collection bin located in the Zoo's Concierge Office.

Donate e-waste items and receive a free carousel pass. Donation bin located in the Zoo’s Concierge Office located at the main entrance.

Spring Has Arrived at the Zoo!

Spring time is here, which means our gardens are putting on an amazing display! Today we are highlighting the Echium candicans, also known as the 'Pride of Madeira'.

This plant flowers blooms of blue, pink and purple, which results in a dramatic vibrancy on our grounds. The Pride of Madeira grows well along coastlines and is drought-tolerant. It attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, which can be seen flourishing on the Zoo's campus.

Come see this stunning perennial shrub in person when you visit this spring during blooming season.

April 8th - Zoo Lovers Day

We are home to a broad range of endangered, exotic and rescued animal species, and our emphasis is to create a space and dialogue for guests to better understand why so many of the world’s species are endangered. Part of that is understanding the breakdown of our animal residents, then visiting the Zoo to appreciate and learn more about these species.

This list is comprised of the total animals housed here and animals that are part of our conservation program.

Mammals – 164 individuals/59 species
Birds – 230 individuals/53 species
Reptiles – 88 individuals/45 species
Amphibians - 2133 individuals/16 species
Invertebrates - 3367 individuals/34 species

Total number = 5982 individuals/207 species
